I have a motorola Surfboard cable modem, and i want to take it to a friends house so we can use it to play online games, we both have the same cable provider but i dont know if they will let you do that or if they can track that your at a different address and is that illegal. My cable provider is insight, and im not sure how they feel about this so i figured i would ask this fourm first. But i want to move it over to his house and use it, insight provides both of our cable connections so do you think that will work or does anyone know from experience if it is illegal or if it even works

It might not work. Some modems register the mac (physical address) of your nic so plugging it another will not work unless you do mac cloning. Also (not sure) it's possible your ISP has your modem configured for a specific cell and will not work in another cell. I think it's the headend that is programmed to recognize your modem... Give it a try, nothing to loose...

when i say address i mean like street address, but anyway we live pretty close together so we might be on the same cell allthough how is a cell setup? I think our whole county might even be in the same cell because were not all that big, or is a cell determied by the tap where you get cable to your house? Well anyway i talked to the cable company and im still waiting to get a reply, but hopefully i can do it

There certainly wont be anything illegal about it. But cable companies tend to use MAC address authentication so it simply might not work.

Why do you need to take your modem if you are both on the same cable provider? Surely you will both have the same modem?

If you are under the impression that you can run both modems off one line and have a PC connected to each modem, this will not work. I am just guessing so i may be wrong. If this IS the case then you need to use a different method of connection, usually via a router with built in switch!

'When all else fails.......read the manual'

It simply will not work. The cable modem is provisioned for a specific node.using mac authentication. You would have to call the cable company to have the modem provisioned then they will de-activate the current modem on the account.

Well thanks for all your help and when i said same cable provider i ment that he had cable form insight but he did now have a modem, but anyway, he just told me that his paretns suprised him with high speed last night so theres no need for this now, How Ironic huh?

Thanks Again
