My son wants to network his computer upstairs and he only has a box of cat5 cable. He was wondering if he did the pin out correctly it could be used between the computer and the router? I wasn't sure.

Yes he can. Just remember to use the pin out for an ordinairy - not crossover - cable.

I have never done it right maybe my pin out was wrong.

If The computers are a fair distance away and the connection is permenant I would suggest using solid core cable and terminating it with a keystone jack at each end. then you just buy 2 short patch leads to connect the keystone to the computer. terminating at keystones is much easier than crimpimg plugs as Blujacket noted.

And if he persists in doing it with cat5 he needs to get RJ45 plugs made for solid wire.
There is a difference.

And as noted above, fanning the wires to get them to insert in the plug can be considered an art, not a science. It can be frustrating and you only get better after a dozen or so.
