I have a Motorola sb4200 Surfboard Cable Modem, and for some reason I can only reach the interent using my USB, not my ethernet, I've tried diffrent cables, diffrent NIC's, even diffrent computers with onboard nic's, I wanna buy a router but I cant if this keeps on screwing up, I checked my Network Properties and I'm sending but not receiving any packets, someone help me please, is it my modem or just me, and I know the rule that I learned in the field, don't overlook the obvious but I'm gettin very frustrated.

by the way I'm running Windows XP if that helps

the thing that gets me about this is that you have narrowed out anything but the modem as long as you are suppose to be using DHCP.

even though it has been about a year since i've worked with the motorola sb4200, i had found that the ethernet card most always works better versis the usb connection.

try browsing to your modem's config pages. they should be at 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.100.0 or something like that check your manual. in these pages you will be able to see if there is a setting disabled. "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

192.168.100.1 is the Motorola 4x00 modem's IP address. I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

If you are positive you have TCP\IP setup properly for DHCP, Did you power your modem down and back up after switching to ethernet, then boot up? These modems tend to lock on to one computer or connection and require a power cycle.

very true jeffbouldin, becuase of the 24 hour IP lease that you are more than likely on, the mac id would need to be reset into DHCP in order to change ethernet adaptors connected to the modem. same thing if you are using two different machines on one modem. as long as both have been online within the 24 hour lease there won't be a need to recycle the modem. but as soon as it has been over 24 hours since a pc has been connected, you would need to recycle the modem. also, if your ISP only allows one IP address this would make it impossible to change from adaptors without recycling the modem between switches.

you see, the obvious does go overlooked sometimes. "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

Depending upon the cable company that you are using most of them register the mac address to your account. So in case with your problem your mac address does not match in their server with your modem and the other computers are not allowed access to the internet. I would suggest calling your tech support and letting them now that you want to use a different nic card so that you can reregister your computer to the server
