C:\windows\dblbuff.sys missing or corrupt error message 3

I have a win 98 os and when I try to boot up system I get error message "C:\windows\DBLBUFF.SYS AND C:\windows\IFSHLP.SYS" are missisng or corrupt. The os never completes loading. Several viruses were removed from the pc by a friend, I know just enough to be dangerous...Does anyone have any ideas?? After the virus was removed the operating system was loading, but we used the system restore disk "supposedly to do a reinstall of win 98" and that is when the above error messages started appearing and the os would not fully load. I am lost....could this still be virus problems??? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated....

I have resolved the problem with the error messages by actually reinstalling win 98se but now I am getting "vnetbios.vxd" file is corrupt or missing error message. Is this the bios file?? Any suggestions??? Thanks again..

You might try the "System File Checker"

Start
Run
sfc (Type in)

Have your 98 CD handy and if any files are missing or corrupt it should replace them.

From memory, I think vnetbios.vxd is associated with a LAN adaptor (network) configuration. If you have a network card in the PC, try removing all the network protocols. Switch off machine, remove network card, and reboot. You may need to manually removed entries from the SYSTEM.INI file.

If the network connection is still required, then try reinstalling the card using the relevant drivers. If requested, insert your WIN98 CD to allow fresh copies of any required Windows files.

Suspicion is that removal of the entry in the mangler or via control panel>netork will force the system to reload the network drivers on the next reboot. Hopefully they will reinatall correctly.

You'll need the CD when it tries to reload.

Thank you all for your great suggestions. I ended up removing all network protocols, then removing my network card, and rebooting. I inserted 98 disk and installed necessary files and all seems to be good now. Thanks again....Have a good day...
