Hi, just looking for some advice as too
a decent desk top computer.
Bought a new computer last week but thinking
of upgrading to ?
The one we have is an E Machine ..
Sempron 3000 2mghz
1 gig ram...
160 hard drive
on board sound
on board video (nvidia GeForce 4 mx graphics 128 mb)
cd rom, dvd r write double burner...
modem, internet ect..and crt monitor for $700.00 new.
but what I am not sure about is the chip
sempron?? It seems to hang at times with on line
games, and while playing adventure role playing games.
It freezes up.
Would I be better off getting amd 64 3200
or Pentium 4 3600
with the new pci express?
I bought quite a few magazines and am trying to read
between the lines and the advertisements for
cpu's and video cards ect. Help ^_^
thanks for your time!
AGAIN!
sam....

Why didn't you buy what you wanted instead of trying to upgrade a new computer?

Sounds like you have an Nforce2 chipset based motherboard because of the integrated GF4 MX graphics.

Several questions and answers spring to mind.

If you are stuck with this rig then the only reasonable upgrade route (without replacing the motherboard) is to buy yourself a full Athlon XP3200+ CPU.
This would represent a reasonable performance increase over the budget Sempron.

Sempron 3.0+ is a 2.0gig CPU with 256 L2 cache and 333fsb
Athlon XP3.2+ " 2.2 " " " 512 L2 " " 400fsb

But the main improvement would be to add a seperate graphics card.
The built in Geforce4 MX440 is entry level by todays standards, so won't play the latest games and is using system memory and resources.
Something like the AGP version of Nvidia's 6600GT depending on budget.

Well of course! they are both faster and more powerful but at least double the price! you get what you pay for!

I suppose if eveything is still pristine and boxed? you could argue to the vendor that you were miss-sold the computer as you stated clearly at the time of purchase it's intended use.
This PC is definately not a gaming PC so to that end and the fact you want to spend more money, they might allow an upgrade to a better PC, one with a higher spec and seperate gaming graphics card.

thankyou again so much for your time.
We are able to return the emachine. It was a good
price but it does not do what we need it to do.
lesson learned.
Now looking at the other end of scale..
thanks all

The way to buy a computer is to deceide what you need the computer to do and then find one at a good price that will do that.

Sam, you may want to find a discussion board where people who play the same games as you post. There, you could ask them what sort of systems they have and what the specs are. I find that before upgrading my machine that I play my games on it helps to know what other (seasoned) players use, rather then an educated guess.. Just some food for thought :)
