Buying and Owning a Domain Name 3

Does anyone know how domain name purchasing works? How does one go about owning a name? Do the sites that claim they will "register" your name for you actually give you ownership (for the yearly fee), or do they sort of rent it out to you?
 
Also, dont forget that YOU are only leasing the domain name and will never "own" it outright ( unless you'r a big a corporation with millions behind you; ie Microsoft; Nike etc) If you dont pay your renewal fees, you can lose it. Best way to guarantee you keep the domain name is to trademark it so that its protected.
 
I guess Verisign is now selling 100 year registration! I'd love to do it if I only had the money. :)
