I'm having a recouring problem that when I get an email and i'm doing something else in another program the PC remembers where the cursor was when the email arrived and thinks i am keeping the left click button pressed (even though I'm not)and I end up selecting everything from this point. I end up having to reboot to get control back?
I am running outlook 97 without the email pop-up message.

Any help would be appreciated....

Sounds like a virus, get some antivirus software update it and scan your drive.

Check is there any accessibility option is switched on.

I also can not use my shift and it inverts my caps lock

Ah. Replace the keyboard. It sounds like your shift key is stuck down. Mudskipper

thanks mudskipper but I'm sure the keyboard is ok as it's only a couple of months old.

any more ideas?

Does age affect brokenness? It's 2 minutes to swap out and test!

Doesn't have to be the keyboard--this is just the most likely. It is also possible that it is the keyboard controller on the motherboard (but you don't want this....)

I would still try another one. It is even possible that a crumb (or something) is stuck under the shift key..... Mudskipper

You can check , if the shift is pressed or not , by open a text editing , and try to type, if the shift is really pressed u will see everything with Capital !

Sounjds like it's your MS Intellipoint properties. Go to start/settings/control panel/mouse

then click the Pointer Options tab. Uncheck the box that says "Snap To" or anything that refers to automatically moving your pointer to the dialog box.. pbxman

Worked it out!

when recieving an email whilst doing something else, somethimes the PC is fooled into thinking the shift key is held down when it isn't.
If I do a mulitple select holding down the shift key the do a single select a couple of times the PC realises and I can continue.
Thanks for your help.
