I recently purchased the IP500 with 5410 and 5420 phones. I was told that there is a way to setup the phone so that if one extension calls another and the call recipiet is on another call already, the display of the caller will let them know that the party they are trying to call is already on a call. this would then prompt them to either hang up, or set the ringback free using the button I've programmed. I cannot figure out how to get the notification to work. Right now they would call and get the user's voicemail after 4 rings which means they'd have to hang up, and call back to set the ringback free. this doesn't makea lot of sense. Any suggestions or instructions?

I've only had this system for 2 weeks now so I'm new to all this. What's an NFR? Is this something anyone can submit? If so, how?

Also, does anyone know if any of these things are already being addressed in the R6.0 release?

This is not in 6.0 because there is probably no NFR done for it.
NFR means New Feature Request.

But i think that while Avaya bought Nortel there might be a big chance this will come as a new feature.
But i think that can take up to a year at least !

Unfortunately we can't discuss R6 features/hardware on here due to a Non-disclosure agreement and Avaya watch this forum like a flock of hawks :)

I have just added these as new feature requests (193) on the ipoffice-pi site :)

Well, that's not very promising, now is it?....

That would indicate the core programming they have to work with that started with the Alchemy does not allow them to do it without breaking other things, if you notice when they give one feature it is usually at the expense of or breaks another, I don't think it's coincidence :)

I just bought the IP Office two weeks ago after making a pitch that it'd take us into the future while the old MICS type units will not (No SIP cabability or VOIP Phones). I was under the impression that Avaya's IP Office and the Cisco systems were market leaders in the IP PBX world. So, it's quite disappointing to hear that there are some things our old system does better then the one we just invested in.

Kinda makes me feel like I have egg on my face.

However, if this is the only feature we're sacrificing while gaining a lot more in most other areas, then it's just a matter of getting used to something new. Which, is to be expected any time you change this type of equipment out. People tend to get set in their ways.

you know, i have battled some customers who want their phones set up the same way as their old switch and got to the point where we turn around and say, why dont we just put your old switch back in?

but you have really already answered your own question by stating the IPO has more future proof features over your old switch.

already pointed out is this:

Automatic Callback

Feature
• When calling an extension that is busy, set the system to call you when the extension becomes free. This feature is also called "Ringback When Free".
• When calling an extension that just rings, set the system to call you when the extension is next used. This feature is also called "Ringback When Next Used".

Benefit
• Carry on with other work and let the system initiate a call for you when the extension becomes available.

Description

Depending on the type of phone a user has, call back when free is accessed by dialing a short code while listening to internal busy tone, selecting an option from an interactive menu or pressing a programmed DSS/BLF key. Callback when free can also be activated from Phone Manager.

You can also set a callback when free or a callback when next used using a short code without attempting a call.

Note that a user can only have one automatic callback set at any one time.

This feature is supported across the IP Office Small Community Network.

You can set this up as a button too.

You said that callback when free can be accessed by "selecting an option from an interactive menu" depending on the type of phone. can you elaborate on this? The interactive menu part is what I'm missing, but perhaps the handsets we have don't handle this feature this way.

Is there a way the "display msg" feature could be used to acheive this?

The display message can not be used i think.
If you call a user that is busy you will see busy in the screen of your phone.
If it rings and the other end is on the phone it is upto that user to answer or not (more then two call appearances)
If you use a user button and the user is busy you can leave a message or activate ringback.

The ipoffice is way more flexible than the Nortel, it only does not work the same way.
As you already mentioned, you have to get used to it.
But that is always the case when you go for a different system, even if it is Nortel or Avaya !

LEarn it and you will lov it :)

Ofcourse it is :)

It needs a total redesign of the ipo software.

The phrase "A stitch in time saves nine" is quite apt here :)

Earler I had meantioned the use of the "Display Msg" feature. I setup a short code *98 as
";[0)151/On Another Call

When I dial it, my own phone displays "On Another Call"

If there were a way to get this message to send to an incoming caller everytime my first call appearance was active, we'd be in business.

Or, maybe using some variation of the softconsole's Text Message feature?
