I'm having a problem accessing a system parameter from Business Vision in a subreport in Crystal Reports. The parameter shows up in the main report but when I try to refer to it in the subreport it is not being recognized. I'm obviously missing a step somewhere. Can anybody help?

Where does it 'show up' in the main report, and how are you trying to refer to it in the subreport? Ken Hamady, On-site Custom Crystal Reports Training & Consulting

If you can see the parameter in the main report, try right clicking on the subreport, select change subreport links, see if you can set the parameter there to your desired field in the subreport. Seagate Certified RCAD Specialist.

It shows up in the list of available fields in the main report and I can stick it on the report if I want or use it in a formula but it's not in the subreport and won't recognize it if I try to put it in the code. I'm trying to use the start and end dates from Business Vision to select records within those dates in the subreport. I'm thinking that it may just be some file that I need to bring in. I don't know much about this as you can tell. Is there some file that has to be loaded to access the system parameters? I'm only getting them in the main report because I'm using a standard report from Business Vision as the basis for my custom report.

You would have to add the parameters in the sub report, and then link them to the corresponding parameters in the main report. Ken Hamady, On-site Custom Crystal Reports Training & Consulting

Please bear with me here but as I said earlier, I do not know very much about this stuff. How do I add the parameters in the sub-report? Do you mean I just make something up and then link it to the system parameter from the main report?

Right click on the subreport in the main report, select change subreport links on the screen that opens, you should be able to find your current parameter listed on the right hand side under the "Container report fields to link to" select on your parameter name there, then press the arrow to place it into the "fields to link to:" section. now at the bottom of that screen you will see "select data in subreport based on field" , use the drop-down menu to select the field you wish to link to. if you just want to pass the parameter and not link it at this time, uncheck the box saying "select data in subreport based on field" Seagate Certified RCAD Specialist.

Bruce,

Linked subreports are a tall order for a beginner.

If you use Bruce's method with date ranges, and if there are two different date parameters, you will have to change the selection formula of the subreport. This is because CR always uses the 'equal to' in the subreport for these parameters.

You will need to change the select expert rule to say:

{Datefield} in {?StartDate} to {?StartDate}

Hi Ken and Lisa,
It is kind of hard to say what exactly to use without knowing if you are using multiple parameters (a start and a seperate end date or if it is a date range.
If it is a date range then the = will work fine, otherwise you will need to use the method that Ken describes, but I think Ken meant to say:
{Datefield} in {?StartDate} to {?EndDate}
Pardons if i am wrong.
Cheers,
