We have a second building that is approximately 100m from our main building. We cannot currently run any cables between them.

What would you suggest would be the best method to allow the 2nd building to access our LAN.

Equipment suggestions or methods would be appreciated.

Thanks.
Ruben

Hi Rubendn,

In this case, you can set up a wireless connection between two buildings. The distance 100m is easier for you to do that. You can use two parabol antennas at two sites ( direction-oriented antennas), but should pay attention to the obstacles between them.

I think you can use the wireless solution of Cisco system, all the wireless equipments such as antennas, bridges, access points are available at Cisco representative agent
in your country.

Good luck

Another option that we have looked at but not yet used, was to use a laser system. We have had presentations from a company named Optical Access on a product called TeraScope. Installation looked easier, much higher speeds than wireless, and much more secured. You can find out more about their products at

Hi there.

In regard to your wireless network application you can check out the Tsunami product (wireless ethernet bridge) at Western Multiplex and Proxim merged not to long ago. They provide some great products for point to point and point to multipoint applications.
What I would suggest you do is go up to the roof and see if you have a clear line of sight to the other building (no trees in the way, etc.) Tree's can interfere with data communication. Once you see you have a clear line of sight what generally will happen is you get two dishes and you run a line down to the Tsunami bridge. The bridge hooks directly into your switch. Now if you need roof penetration then you need to get someone in to make sure that end is taken care of. Also, need to find a conduit or something to ground it to. Make sure when you get the system to get a lightening arrestor (some places won't push it)but you can never be too safe. The data can be licensed exempt or you can get the 23 GHz license. For your set up you can expect to pay about $10K which includes the two dishes, bridges, mounting, etc. It depends on the speed you want, etc.
I would stay away from laser (or use it as a backup in conjunction with your system) It tends to have a lot of interference problems especially with fog.

Take Care
