i'm building my first computer and i've run into a few problems. When i start the computer up it beeps like normal then right after the beep, it beeps one really short time. I there is a beep code but i'm not sure what it means and i'm tired of searching on a modem. Also the keyboard lights up twice(once for the normal beep and the other for the second short beep). But when i start up, the computer finds all my drives, but stops after listing the PCI devices. Occasionaly it will ask for a system disk. It will take a floppy boot disk but won't read a cd(like a windows install). Other than the beeps it gives no other error message. Oh it is a ASUS A7V8X-X mobo. I think it could be a short but i'm not sure if it is or how to find out.

It seems like the beeps are normal. although 2 is a little strange...but with no error message and your computer getting through POST, the basic hardware (cpu, ram, video) sounds like it's fine to me.

I dont understand if youre saying it "won't read a cd" as if it wont boot from one or if it wont read from one even if you boot up with a floppy first.

For the boot from CD: Have you checked your BIOS settings to make sure "boot from CD" is enabled?

And if it wont read at all: have you tried another CD besides that Windows install just to see if it will read it? Have you tried a different cdrom drive to see if that one works?

One thing i've had happen to me before was the IDE cable was not all the way in the drive. BIOS identified it and the drive seemed to be hooked up properly, but it wouldnt work. a little shove on that cord fixed 'er right up. sounds elementary but you never know...

are u sure you've got the jumper sset correctly on the cd if you're running it on the same cable as the hard drive.
make sure the hard drive is set top master and the cd is set to slave (the jumpers are on the back of the cd near the ide cable normally)
oh it doesn't sound like a mobo prob. i think that if it has a mobo prob it has 3 long beeps then 1 short, but not too sure on that.

Every ASUS board I have built a computer with I have had to install all the drivers and software off the motherboard CD FIRST before installing anything else. ALso, have you tried installing fail safe drivers? Have you installed windows?

Hi all,

sounds more than likely that your

a) HD is going on you,
b) the IDE cable is bad,
c) wrong BIOS setting for HD,
d) CD Drive is bad or
f) the IDE cables are loose...

all of the above can cause you to have a hickup in booting...

everything else you are experiencing (the beeps) are normal... the first beep tells you that the powerup is successfull and the second beep tells you that the POST was successfull...

Ben

hmmm. im not sure, but i think you should hear only one beep. after the beep you should see the bios post. if you hear one beep followed by another beep after a while it sounds like spontaneous rebooting to me...symptom of a bad ram(if windows wasnt installed yet). can you provide us specs of your PC?
try to set all the default settings in the bios by pressing [del] key while booting then choose load defaults. also try to recall if you have touched any jumpers. reset all in their default settings.
and yeah i dont think it is a short.

Hi there,

Ooops, got it a bit wrong...

if it is AMI BIOS then the 1xLong and 1xShort beep indicates a problem with the MoBo (check your FSB and Multiplier settings to eventually correct the fault)...

of course you should try clearing the CMOS first...

Ben

ps. I got a mobo that does beep twice at start up like yours... and it is fine 'til this day...
