Folks,

I currently am having a problem with getting BackupExec to do a full backup of my Exchange Information Store. As a result, my transaction log files are piling up.

My setup:
Exchange 2k (SP1)
BackupExec 8.6 (w/Exchange agent, Open File Option, and agent accelerator).
Windows 2k (SP2)

BuEx and Exchange are installed on the same machine. Whenever I try a "Full" backup, BuEx barfs on the Information Store. The job log reports that Access is denied to database and WARNING: 'Mailbox Store (SERVER)' is a corrupt file. This file cannot verify.

Win2k's application log reports, Information Store(2460) The database page read from the file 'D:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\mdbdata\priv1.edb'.......failed verification due to a page checksum mismatch. The log entry goes on to say that the read operation will fail with the dreaded error -1018. This entry gets repeated while the backup job is trying to run. After BuEx barfs, Exchange event logs go back to normal. I have the BuEx service account in the proper groups for system access. Someone in another forumn suggested the priv1.edb error was due to the database being open. Does this also cause the Acccess denied errors?Do I have a corrupted mailbox somewhere? I would be slobberingly grateful for any help. X-)

First, you must purchase the Exchange Agent, if you already have not. No you don't have any corrupted files. The text in the BE 8.6 book does not fully cover all that you need to do. It all has to do with the service account and unique mailbox name. During installation, you are prompted for the service account name and password, and in small business server, you are forced to make that account the administrator account. Then, when in BE you attempt to expand the mailbox store, showing the mailboxes, you are prompted for the unique mailbox name. Enter the mailbox name for your administrator account (if it is unique. The BE book defines what a unique name is). Then you must, in your Exchange System Manager, right click on the mailbox store, go to properties, then security tab. Highlight the adminstrator user, go to the bottom of its list of permissions. Send and recieve should be at the bottom, with Deny checked and grayed out. Put a check in the allow box, this will override the deny. This is what Microsoft says to do for this. It worked for me last night. I was having the same problem as you, got a full backup last night.

Billykilgo,

Thanks for the advice but I'm not trying to backup my mailboxes. I am trying to backup the database.
