I am facing blue screen error with my laptop when I want to erase the temporary Internet explorer files. I use Ccleaner for this purpose, and I receive a blue screen giving error because of System Restore Exception. The laptops starts again and works fine until I try to delete these files.

Is there a different way to erase these files without getting a blue screen error?
thanks in advance

You can set your computer to NOT automatically restart after a BSOD. Do it via the Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\System\ Advanced System Settings\ Startup and recovery\ System Failure.

You can also use the Event Viewer to see the errors that you are having.

Working with Vista’s new Event Viewer

I could manage to write down the error code that displayed every time I received those BSOD. The error is:

STOP 0x0000003B (0x00000000 c 0000005, 0xFFFFF80002EB664E, 0XFFFFF88007F7F8E0, 0X0000000000000000)
SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION

I have searched Google and came acroos this article from Microsoft, which describes the problem well, but it does not link to those files to download them.
"This issue occurs because of an error in the Microsoft IEEE 1394 driver stack, in which the buffer that is allocated to the driver stack does not initialize correctly."

Anyone have a clue of where to get these files?

At the top of the linked page, there is a hot link to download the hot fix pack from microsoft,( looks like a wrench and a screwdriver) it will take you to a page that allows you to choose which version of the fix you need. choose the top if you have a 32 bit windows 7, middle if you have 64 bit version, and do not select the last because you don't have an Itanium.

Thanks for the info, I tried to run the file but it gave a message that it can not be updated on this laptop.
I have a x64 Win7, and I downloaded the x64 file. Very confusing.

Does it make any difference if you try right-clicking on the actual Hotfix.exe and select the "Run As Administrator" option? Do so even if your user is an Admin.

Is your Anti Virus or other software interfering?

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

I have tried by right clicking on the file and open it as adminstrator, but that option is not valid.
I don't think that antivirus or other programs intereferre, so far I haven't seen such message in Win7.

Did this Hotfix get downloaded as a zipped file from Microsoft (perhaps even with password protection) or does it come down as just a normal .exe file?

Have you tried downloading the file again in case the first download was corrupted?

Maybe you are incorrect in your assumption that your machine needs this Hotfix? Are you running Service Pack 1 on this machine?

I notice the second parameter in the error message is "c 0000005" this often indicates an access permissions type of error. When using CCleaner did you allow it to do more to your machine than just remove temp files, did you allow it to remove entries from your Registry?

Use the Vista instructions in this to reset to default the security settings.

How do I restore security settings to the default settings?

What recovery options come with your Laptop, as you have been battling this problems for a week or more maybe it is time to consider a clean install of Windows?

Question:

where does the IEEE1394 (Firewire) come into play, when you attempt to CLEAN the Temp.IE files, I wonder???

I tried to run the file but it gave a message that it can not be updated on this laptop.
perhaps because the update precedes SP1?

Hotfix release date: 20-Feb-2010

SP1 release date: 15-Mar-2011

The file i downloaded at MS is a zip file, and the pc is updated to SP1, I have searched the files and can see the latest versions are in my windows folder, but still get the bsods with the same error code.

I am not sure what that firewire (IEEE1394)is doing on my pc, because I don't have such port at all.

I have managed to delte those files in Safe mode, but its imposiible to delte them in normal mode.

Mach04,

IEEE1394 and your problem with the BSOD, while attempting to clean the IE TEMP files, have nothing to do with each other... I was trying to get that across with my Question above, but alas I failed to do so clearly...

the files WHERE up to date on your PC, they are drivers that Windows keeps in a ready state, in case such a device is plugged in... Deleting them will not cause harm NOR will it get rid of the BSOD you are experiencing, I state again they (IEEE1394) have NOTHING, NADA, NIX, NUY and NON to do with the PROBLEM at hand!

the HOTFIX did not work because it was OLDER, and Windows does not replace NEWER FILES with OUTDATED FILES...

That BSOD used to denote a problem with the SERIAL DRIVER under PRE VISTA Windows OS'S...

0x00000038: SERIAL_DRIVER_INTERNAL

BUT you have Windows 7 and the above does not APPLY anymore...

so MACH04, what does the EVENTVIEWER say to this error?

what USB devices are attached (other than KBRD and MOUSE)? removing them does the error keep showing up?

what AV do you have installed? is it AVG? if so remove it and install MSE... error gone?

AVG Antivirus and Security Software - Tools download (AVG REMOVER 2011)

Reboot

MSE

other things to do:

1. UpDate the VGA drivers...
2. run MemTest86+ and test memory...
3. move the Pagefile from the C: partition (default) to another partition...
4. Report back...

BadBigBen,

I ran the memtest, although it took quite a long time, but it didn't show any error.
I have updated most of my hardwares as well as Windows too. Beside I am only using a mouse connected to a USB drive.
I have also removed AVG and installed MSE.

What do you mean by "move the Pagefile from the C: partition (default) to another partition..."
Are you referring the Temp folder?

BadBigBen,

I did change the Page file as you said, and I have tried to run the Ccleaner with no problem at all. Thanks for the help.

By the way why isn't it safe using AVG or other antivirus, and why use Microsoft security essential instead?

Mach04,

it has nothing to do about being save to run MSE and AVs being bad, just that from reading on the error, that AVG stood out to be one of the problems associated with said BSOD... ;-)

now, attempt the cleanup as you would usually do, does it still BSOD (get the same error)? if not then most likely we have nailed it down to either the Pagefile or AVG... to figure out if AVG was the problem, revert the pagefile back to the C: partition letting Windows handle the size, reboot and attempt to clean the IE Tempfiles...

my guess is that the problem was AVG... probably due to the way it scans files and holding them (the IE Temp folder & files) in check... (sorry, can't explain it better at this time)...

BadBigBen,
Once again thanks for yor help.
I have switched back the Page file to its startitng point, and ran Ccleaner and it is not giving any BSOD :)
The problem as you said is because of AVG antivirus program, but its a pitty that I can not use it. I am not sure whether MSE will give a good protection. Maybe I have to try another antivirus program, anyone you can suggest that won't give BSOD?

MSE and Avast are the two front runners in total protection as I have seen. At my shop, we had put MSE and Avast individually against a system with Norton and MacAfee and the MSE/Avast one always out performed both in total system performance and coverage/protection.

I personally use AVIRA AntiVir, though it has been lately in the news where it would offer to install the ASK TOOLBAR on the FREE version...

MSE is in my opinion just as good if not better than AVG...

I am quite sure that someone else here could also suggest another antiviral software and or confirm what I stated about MSE...

other good AV programs would include: Avast and Bitdefender, just to name a couple...
