We've received our first OEM Vista machine into the office, it's a brand we don't usually buy: "Acer A700" :S. When we attempt to install xp pro over vista we get a blue screen of death 0x0000007B. Even before it accesses the hard drive. We tried the obvious: -swap out ram, boot from different disc, even win2k pro does the same thing. It has a SATA dvd rom, but we even tried booting from a USB dvd drive and the same thing happened.

Has anyone seen anything like this? I'm guessing this error is specific to hardware on this machine, and NOT to installing xp over top of vista. I've called acer they they said that this machine is "probably" compatible with win2k pro. Nice.

When you attempt to boot from the XP CD are you getting as far as the option to install Mass Storage drivers at the F6 prompt, or is it bombing out on getting the XP CD read in the DVD combo drive?

Limited OEM driver support is available with F6 during Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 setup

it's bombs out in the "starting windows" section of the install.

Refresh my memory, when does it say "starting windows", how far (minutes etc.) in to the install is that?

What is currently on the hard drive now, or is it just blank, has it been formatted, can it be formatted, is it IDE or SATA?

Are you able to get Vista back in without any error?

Yeah, vista runs no problem. It's about 15 minutes into the install. We even unplugged the power from the HD just to make sure it had nothing to do with the current OS on the drive.

Ivo

Are you saying that you are trying to install XP on to an external hard drive, and trying to create a dual boot? If Vista is still on the machine which drive or partition is XP going to be installed in?

Can you supply details of your current setup (and clear up my confusion) and also explain what you are trying to achieve. From your initial post I thought you had scrubbed Vista and were trying to replace it with XP.

These MSKB will indicate logs created by Setup which might be helpful.

Setup stops responding with 34 minutes remaining

Setup stops responding or displays an unrecoverable error message

You can use the Microsoft Windows XP Upgrade Advisor tool (On the XP CD) to audit the current status of your computer and get a report of known hardware and software compatibility issues

Hi,
Sorry to hijack, but I have exactly the same problem as Ivo:

Installing Windows XP Pro over Windows Vista Home causes a BSOD (0X0000007B) after Windows XP Pro loads drivers into memory. Approximately 3 mins into installation, just after 'Windows is starting setup'

It is a brand new Dell desktop.

Thanks for any help

Paul

7B is a hardware error.
This self same issue has appeared on the Vista forum. I do not think that you can install XP on the same harrddrive/partition as a replacement for Vista without removing Vista completely

You best bet maybe to purchase a new harddrive and install XP to that.

You've gots to be joking! :O

Would using DBAN be a solution?

I will go hunt on the vista forum for more help as well.

Thanks!

Not the Vista Forum, but the Hardware Forum, however, the postee solved the problem as so (note this was a Dell machine)

after googling for a bit...i read about changing SATA operation to Raid AutoDetect from Raid On and tried the installation again...and everything worked fine...

Worth checking

Spot on. That worked a treat. Appears that 'Raid On' sunk XP.

System is a Dell Dimension E520 for reference.

Next step...find the SATA drivers for XP....which should be fun...NOT.

Thanks,

Paul

Thanks you, ASG0856! You've relieved a major headache for me!
