I keep getting a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD)
Stop Code: 0x00000024 and "partmgr.sys"
everytime I try to re-install windows XP on
this "Gateway" Model 700XL
The HDD is a Western Digital 120GB
CPU = Intel P4
MOBO = E210882
RAM = 512MB PC800 rdram (rambus)
I have changed out all ribbon cables, I have
removed every PCI card (except VGA Video card)
I have run memtest86, microscope v12 & many Hard Drive tests and they all come up fine!
I've set the BIOS to "Default".
I have tried to re-install over 10 times so far!
The BSOD happens the same spot everytime during the
copying files part.
Can someone please tell me what I need to do to finish
this re-install??? I'm about to lose my mind!!

Thanks,

Rob

This stop error means that your ntfs file system is corrupt (damage in the file system, bad hard drive data, corrupt SCSI or IDE drivers or a corrupt ntfs.sys file).

How do I resolve the problem?

There are two ways,

1, If you still can access Windows, try to disable any backup programs, virus scanning programs or disk defragmenter tools. Try also to run a hardware diagnostics tool to detect any errors your hard drive might have. And run chkdsk /r to detect and repair any file system structural damage.

2, If you are unable to load Windows. Then you should try to access your ntfs partitions by making a ntfs boot disk with NTFS4DOS (freeware). You can download it from You will need a floppy disk.

After you load the bootable floppy disk onto your damaged system, select either option one (1) or option three (3). If you selected option one (1), type chkdsk /r at the command prompt, and your problem should go away after the disk has been repaired.

Note! Unfortunately there is a chance that your partition is corrupt beyond repair and all of your data is lost. In that case, you need to reformat the partition to be able to use it again.

Good luck!

Thanks for the great stuff mrfixit!

I for got to mention that I removed this hard drive
from the gateway and successfully (the 1st time) re-installed windows on a spare dell that I have runnning.
But on returning the hard drive to the gateway it wouldn't
boot up, so i'm stuck trying to get through these BSOD
with this gateway!

Any ideas how or what I need to do to get this drive to boot up in this gateway if I install windows in a dell??
By the way, both computers have Intel P4's.

Thanks Again!

Rob

I tried that.......I get the same BSOD!

Do a zero fill of the drive.
Then try the reinstallation again.

try a different drive. you may have a hardware issue unrelated to to installing windows....by chance are you getting the BSOD during the "detecting hardware" phase?

in the BIOS set all default settings to safe mode
I can go on and on ... I will just wait to see what your results are

I was able to re-install windows xp finally after removing
the ram modules and cleaning them with an eraser!!
How about them marbles!!

Thanks to everyone for there help!!
