brush stroke "sampling"?

hi everyone, noob here =)

I haven't found anything in the help files but i think my problem is a simple one so here it is:

When i paint quick strokes with any brush (the problem is the most apparent with smaller-sized brushes), the curves are usually flattened somewhat and look like a low-polygon object. I could slow down of course, but for sketching that just doesn't work.

Now i'm pretty sure that photo-paint 9 (the version i own) has an option somewhere like photoshop to increase what i think they call the "sampling" of the brush. That way even with fast brush strokes, the lines are smooth throughout. Takes up more RAM and CPU power but i think my machine can handle it. Oh and i know it's not my wacom's fault or its software setup because Alias' Sketchbook Pro renders very smooth strokes...

How do i fix this problem in photo-paint 9??

I've taken an extensive look inside the Brush Settings but i haven't found anything... =/ There doesn't seem to be a setting in there to increase the sampling... what now? =(

well, possibly it's your terminology that's getting in the way. "Sampling" to me would mean that you're grabbing data from one source and trying to clone that somewhere else.

Perhaps what you mean is the "dabs"? Look under the Dab Attributes under the Brush settings docker and change the spacing or number of dabs. Other than that, I can't offer any more advice as it's not entirely clear what you mean by "sampling.

sorry i confused you... here's what i meant in the form of 2 images. The bad.jpg file was done with photo-paint and the good.jpg was done with sketchbook pro. Both circles are quickly painted strokes and the results should speak for themselves.

does this help in understanding the problem? Also, i did try messing with the dab attributes (and all other attributes in the brush settings for that matter) to no avail...

that looks more like you used a vector tool in Draw than Photopaint. I can't duplicate your results. A 2px nib is quite smooth. Are you sure you're using antialiasing on the nib? Are you using a stylus or a mouse? If you're using a stylus, can you duplicate the problem with a mouse?

i checked that the anti-aliasing option was on and the problem is the same. I'm using a Wacom Graphire I and i can duplicate the problem with my mouse. I can't move the mouse in a circle quite as fast as my pen so the results aren't as horrifying, but they're still there. I even downloaded the trial version of Painter 8 and it doesn't show any anomalies.

from what you were saying, isn't it possible that there's some setting in the Tools>Options that i'm missing that could be causing this problem? grid spacing maybe? something like that?

dunno - i don't use a stylus, but I'd bet that's where your problem lies. You'd probably get better results asking over at the official Corel newsgroups. Point your newsreader (not web browser) over at cnews.corel.com and ask in the photopaint v9 forum.
