Browsers not working in WIn 98SE

I originally posted this as a problem with visting secure web sites and I think that it is more then that.

The machine is a HP running Win 98 se and IE 5.5 (although I think this is not really relevant. The porblem initailly manifests itself with not being able to visit https sites.

I have since loaded IE 6 and also Netscape 7.1 to see if this would fix the problem. It did not as under either of the new browsers I cannot display ANY web sites.

I have done everything that I can to solve the problem including everything on the MVS site that has been posted here before as well as following every hint I can get from the Knowledge base at Microsoft but as it affects both IE and Netscape it appeasr that it is a problem within the machine and that the registry has been corrupted somehow.

I have deleted the Schannel entry but that did not work.

Under Ie it comes back and says the page cannot be displayed. With Netscape it simply says something along the lines that the web site cannot be returned.

Does anyone have any idea of what entries in the registry could be corrupt?

First, make sure your date and time on the pc are correct.

Then, go to Tools > Internet options > General Tab > under "Temporary Internet Files," hit delete cookies and delete files > Ok.

Post back if no joy.

Yes. if you have a look at the link to the verisign site you will see it is a https site (

https://www.verisign.com/support/site/rootDoc.html)

The problem I am having is that I cannot egt to any https site so downloading a new certificate from one will not help.

As I said, I think there is a problem in the registry somewhere and sshort of re-installing WIN 98se I was hoping someone might give me a clue of which entries may be cauing a problem.
