Hello, I have a situation....

When I log into my network using my user name, I can ping yahoo.com and every other webiste on the net but I can not access the site when I use a browser (I get an error that reads "http (403) forbidden ...". When i go to another computer I still can not open the site up in IE explorer but I can ping still. However, if the administrator logs in to the same computers I used...he can access the site using IE explorer and ping.

Why is this happening? What do I need to do in order to view the internet again?

Thanks in advance for your help and insight.

if the proxy server settings are messed up, how will i know? what casues the settings to be messedup? what can i do to correct the settings?

Are you using a proxy server? If not, in IE go to Tools, Internet Options, Connections tab, Lan Settings button, and uncheck everything.

how can i tell if i am using a proxy server?

Ask your IT Manager, Internet Service Provider, or whoever set your machine up.

is the admin trying to fix the issue also? if so tell him to login and reset user rights. from what you've stated the admin is the only one with "rights" to browse. can you browse to another pc's folders on your network within IE?

when i worked in a call center for IT support our admin did that to us. TCP/IP was still needed for our job but not surfing the net. we had all we needed on intranet sites. well, that didn't really last long. our night crew was bored alot of the time. needless to say one day we could surf. ;-) "Jack of all trades. great!!!!! quick question, how/where does he reset the user rights? thanks again!!!

that would depend on the OS and NOS. for server 2000 you would make the user a member of the administrator group. same place you see the group "users" listed. but thats for win 200 server. either way if you add the domain user account to the machine's local administrator group, then he/she will be an administrator on that machine. this will give alike access as admin. it would depend how the restrictions were set-up to change them back. Howdy:

Sounds to me like you are trying to find someone to help you circumvent your companies internet access policies.. To do so would be illegal and grounds for dismissal if you are caught.. and caught you will be.. If the IT department is on their toes, they are already logging every site you are going to and make be logging keystrokes as well..

hey murray....no it is not that serious...i work i na small buisness enviornment....everyone surfs and we dont have any internet policies...it's laid back here...i just want to be able to help another user get on the net....she was able to but can't get on now...

thanks for the heads up though. any more info si still appreciated.

no, she did install 'quickbooks 2001' though, but it appears as if her profile is corrupted somehow becaseu both her and the guest account can not log in. i can, admin can adn everyone else can access the internet via IE Explorer but she just can't. she can ping websites though.

what version of windows is it? is there a NOS other than windows? "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

have you tried my previous post?

if there is no server and its peer to peer networking, have the admin login and go to "users" in control panel. all the settings you need should be there.

if there is a win 2000 server my previous post should give her any rights needed. "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

yeah, i ddi that. i let the user have admin rigths and i also let the user have the same rights as me becaseu both myself adn the admin can log in. still, no dice. her past rights allowed her to log in but for soem reason she did something or something happened that i am unaware of that does not now allow her to use IE explorer with those same rights that allowed her to use it before.

well besides deleting her user account and adding another one, i would first try running msconfig under her login and disable all start-ups. reboot and see if that helps. "Jack of all trades. Master of none."
