Browser links to network folders do not work

I'm looking for short or long term fix for our simple "intranet"

I built a page of html links to network folders. the page was hosted on local web server, so came up with URL. from that page, all company users in 80 different branches could access their reports and results for that branch. corporate departments (Finance, Operations, Sales support, etc) used Excel Macros or reporting tools to push individual reports to those 80 different branch folders, separated as needed by branch, area, year, month, etc. folder security allowed users to only see files in their area/branch/department. It provided a simple interface for the whole company to access reports specific to their needs.

Since then, links to network folders are beginning to fail (See for example https://kb.mozillazine.org/Links_to_local_pages_do_not_work). There are extensions that can be added to Chrome, Firefox, Edge (https://chromewebstore.google.com/d.../nikfmfgobenbhmocjaaboihbeocackld?hl=en&pli=1 for example). These extensions sometimes produce less than optimal results (opening file folders in a browser window rather than file folder explorer)

I recognize that accessing reports in file folders is older technology. Until we can move our reporting to a reporting platform or figure how to automate publication of reports to Sharepoint , we're looking for a way to get users to the files they need daily.

Thanks.
