My browse list has several stations that have been off of the network for months. I am seeing no event log errors and I have no clue how to clean them up. We currently use no WINS server and there are no DNS or AD registrations for these stations.

I have tried forcing elections and changing the master browser station. To be honest I am drawign a blank, I know some of the things to do when things don;t show up, a little confused about things not going away,

Thanks for any tips

Were these machines just taken off the network or were they removed from the domain first?

To be honest, I inherrited this problem so I cannot answer with any certainty. But it is likely they were just removed from the network, and removed from AD some time after that

Is it possible you have multiple network segments on your LAN where there could be another master browser? Take a look at the following article to see if it helps

Troubleshooting the Microsoft Computer Browser Service

I have seen that article before ( but one more perusal could not hurt).

While that article is focused on finding why a computer is not is the browse list, it offers a couple of interesting tests.

(I will use the reference to one computer even though there are more than one)

- ComputerX is in the browse list of its segment
- The PDC (on that same segment) is also getting it from the master browser
- While there are multiple segments, we do not run WINS and the master browsers on each of the other segments also have ComputerX in the browse list
