I have a Win98SE machine who's IE ver. 6.0.2600 isn't working. I rebooted the machine today (27) and it brings up an old page from the 25th.....and that's it. It won't go anywhere I ask it to after that. The machine is on a small home network with two other machines. One of those is the same as the one that isn't working but seems to be working fine. This one, obviously, works as well. The machines get an IP address from a netgear router, which in turn gets it IP from a cable modem. I used the winipcfg app to clear and then renew an IP address for the down machine. It successfully draws an address but, the browser still doesn't work. The machine that doesn't work also has a printer attached to it locally that the is shared to the other machines and that set up still works. What the hell is going on with the browser? I've rebooted the computer (of course) but that didn't fix it. I'd reboot the modem/router but, they seem to be working.
Oh, one more thing, pinging domain names from a DOS prompt works on the machine who's browser isn't working.
Thanks for your help in advance...

let me just suggest a couple things.. Let me know if they help at all.

First I would check the way that IE is caching. (Tools | Internet Options) in the Temporary Internet Files Section click on Settings. The default setting is Automatic. Lower you cache amount and I would also delete the temporary internet files.

Secondly I would check the connections tab and make sure that you dont have a proxy address implemented. (Tools | Internet Options) click the connections tab. Under the LAN settings make that that the proxy is cleared.

Hope this helps.

RedTech...thanks for the suggestions, but they didn't fix it. I left the 'check for newer versions of stored pages' setting on automatic. As for clearing temporary internet files, I have my history at '0' so, there shouldn't be that many there. Also, the proxy in my LAN settings is cleared.
New information: I waited and waited for the usual error page that comes when a page can't be found or your connection is beat but, that never happened. Instead, eventually, the page loaded. I used IE's back button and my home page (yahoo) was current. So, it is loading pages, just slowly, very slowly, slower than when I used a dial-up connection. I threw Diablo II in and was able to play online without any trouble. I'm only having trouble with the browser.
Any further suggestions?

REDTECH is right on the money. The old date on the web page is there simply because you are viewing a cached page.

simply delete temp internet files.

Have you tried to repair IE from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. Sorry, I know nothing about networks, but the Repair function seems like the obvious choice.

Didn't know there was a repair option, I'll check it out and let you know...

Uh, and I still don't. Had a look, can't find repair function. Is it an option with Win98?

Found the repair option. I was looking for Internet Explorer, not Microsoft IE, which seems redundant but, whatever. I ran the repair option and rebooted (at the machines request), to no avail. It's taking forever to find the page. Actually, I'm starting to think that it's taking forever to detect the proxy settings. Once I get on with IE everything works relatively well. Does that make sense to anyone? Do I have a virus?
