Hello all!!!

I have a problem, with sharing an internet connection, wondering if anybody can help me please??!!

I have the main PC with 2 nic cards installed. the 1st NIC card is receiving the broadband connection. and the other NIC card is going out to the 2nd computer. and then I tryed to set them up with a local network. But it doesn't appear to be working.
Surley this can be done. As I dont have any money to spend on it! (I'm soo Poor!!), But somebody told me I would need a 4 port hub with a router, which will cost me £70. Which at the mintue is £60 over my budget.
So I'm sure that one of you Brill people could help me.

Thanks in advance!!

What OS are you running? You need to enable Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). ICS comes with Win 98 Second Edition and above, I believe. When you enable that, it should set your 2nd NIC to the IP of 192.168.0.1, so you'll need to set the other PC with an IP.
IP 192.168.0.x where x is a number from 2 to 254
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.0.1
DNS addresses need to be the same as the DNS for your internet connection.

It's been a while since I've used ICS, so I may be missing a few steps. If you need any additional help, let me know.

Hi Goodfela,

Thanks for your help!

I am at work at the mintue. So as soon as I get home and let you Know!

Hi Sorry! But I forgot to answer your question.
The main PC is windows XP Pro, and the second at the moment is Windows NT 4.0. I am actually looking to change the NT o/s to windows 2000 Pro.

Thanks again.

I'm not near a Windows XP PC right now, but if you go into the properties for the NIC that is connected to the internet, there may be a sharing tab. Click on that and there may be an option for Internet Connection Sharing. Let me know how it works out for you.

With ICS the "host" pc (the one with 2 nics) sends out DHCP. The 2nd pc should be set to DHCP (set IP address to use automatic settings).

On the host pc you need to know which nic has been set to go to your internet source. If your connections are reversed it will not work.

Also, host pc must always be connected or the 2nd pc will not get out.
