I will be networking two to three PC's for internet sharing.Whether it will be xDSL or cable modem internet, will it be logical to designate the stronger, more powerful PC as the Host, and the others as the clients?I want to network the systems to share internet access only not file sharing, etc.How would I config for Internet sharing only?Thanks....

Buy a router recommmend dlink 504 or draytek vigor 2600 no pressure will be put on any pc for internet conection as the router will become your gateway

As said above a router is the best way.

If you live in the UK and your main choices are NTL Cable and BT ADSL Draytec do great router called a 2200** which lets you plug thee modem they give you into it. I've used them a couple of times and found them to be very configurable and stable. We bought ours from

Your decision will be based on what sort of BB modem you have.

BT & freeserve supply a USB modem - in which case you'll have to plug this into a PC and use ICS (Internet Connection Sharing). I've not found a router which can connect to a USB modem.

If you have a modem with an ethernet connection, a simple router will do the job - I use a Belkin 4-Port Cable/DSL Gateway Router (about £35 - £40 UK).

manarth,

The Vigor 2200USB was designed specifically for the Alcatel Speetouch USB modem which BT provide (we use the solution here).

The Vigor 2200E is the same solution but designed for the NTL models.

Regards.

thanks grenage - I've never seen a USB compatible router before!

live and learn :)

Is it possible to ditch the BT "frog" USB modem thingy and use a router only ?

Well not with just a router no.

But you CAN buy modem/router combo's which are very common now (Generally they are modem/router/switch combo's). These cost a little more but you can still buy a half decent one cheap on ebay. The BT 5861 is a good example since its already configured for BT and takes 10 seconds to connect up, and can be cracked to provide advanced options if required.

Hi Grenage,

I need your help asap. Can you please guide me to some resources where i can find how to crack open fully my bt 5861. i have the following set-up. The BT 5861 connects directly into a network switch, which then has three computers attached to it. I can connect very well to the outside world, but i cannot connect remotely from outside to the network here. Have you got any ideas how i can get the advanced options of the BT BLACK BOX they gave me. I need to forward the IPs from the box to a pc on the network that will act as a 'Server'.

Thanks in advance
JP
