I have just got connected to Broadband. Yes, we're a bit slow in the West Country!
Everything is OK, but I have great difficulty in trying to reconnect/enable Broadband when the PC is unused for some hours, and have to reboot to reconnect which is a bit of a pain.
This happens whether or not the Broadband line is left connected /enabled or disconnected/disabled.
I have contacted the ISP and they suggested reinstalling the drivers. I have done this but the problem remains.
The modem lights show everything is fine, and the modem is well ventillated. A System check shows that the modem is working correctly.
There are no viruses on the PC, and the PC HD has been
scanned.
Any ideas please? I am running XP Home.Thanks.

When you say "I can't get connected" what error message is it that you actualy get?

Which ISP are you using? some ISP's like AOL can use funny dialer software rather than the windows one ... also would help if we knew the make/model of the modem.

Thanks, Rob

Going by the west country bit I'm guessing you may be the UK?

What make / model of Modem is it?

Is it ethernet or USB connection.
I'm going by memory so forgive for the vagueness.
If ethernet,
try going into the properties of the network card, choosing Power save option and making sure that there is no power save on the network card.

Reboot, see what happens.

Hi Rob & Stu,
Thanks for the swift response!

Rob, there is no error message at all. It just fails to reconnect.I'm using 'PlusNet'.The modem is a "Voyager 205 ADSL Router.

Stu,
Please see above. Also, it's a USB2 connection via a powered hub.The PC's Power settings are set to "Do not hibernate".
Thanks,
Mel

If the router is anything like my D-link its a config issue on the router ... does it have a control pannel you can access?

On my D-link i have to set the Time-out on the router to 0 so that it doesnt disconnect after a period of time .. also set the "max fail" attempts to 0 so it will re-try continuesly if the connection is lost.

Thanks,

Rob

Hi Rob,

Thanks for the swift response.

The router is a closed unit and there is no access to the 'works', as it were, from properties. Any unauthorised acces would I assume invalidate the warranty.

Regards,

Mel

two thoughts:
if it is possible to connect this device via ethernet than usb, i would suggest doing so.

also, for troubleshooting, i would remove the device from the hub and plug it directly into an internal usb port on the computer itself. usb hubs can be problematic.

Yeah .. didnt mean cracking the case open ... i connect to my router through an ethernet or wireless connect ... i can access the control panel through a web interface using internet explorer and ploping in the IP address of the router.

yep this is the most likey reason. Mel you need to try and configure the router via web access. Do you know the ip address of the router? If it was 192.168.0.1 (very commonly it is) you would put this into internet explorer:

Hi jimp56,
Have tried connecting directly to PC's USB2 terminal: no improvement. Any other ideas please?

Hi Rob/Tamed Tech,
Thanks for your help. I haven't got an Ethernet facility so it's got to be USB2.
Has anyone got any more ideas to solve my problem?
Thanks to everyone who responded,
Mel

This may not be an isolated issue, also have you tried updating the firmware?

Can you borrow a nic and try ethernet? If you plan to keep this system it may even be worth just investing in a nic, they are quite inexpensive these days, USB is a variable you don't need...

Daniel.

I'm with Daniel on this one ... if your PC doesnt currently suppoer ethernet its probably old and in best case scenario could use replacing.

USB is always an X factor in problems like this and you could do without it.

You can pick up a NIC from the local PC shop for about 15 or 20 pounds.

so what was it? following taht link goes to another forum post with loads of people descrbing the same problem and I dont know which one is the answer witout reading all of them

Please see "JonnyRotten" details.
It did it for me,
Mel66

Eh? You forwarded ports and that stopped the disconnections, seems unrelated, can you just tell us or link directly to the post that solved your problem? Was it a firmware upgrade?

Daniel.

Hi Daniel,
I followed 'Jonny Rotten's' advice, i.e. ran 'ipcofig/all' to get all Local Area Connection detals.
The problem was with my router network config, and I needed to reset the network configuration and assign the local IP addresses manually instead of using dhcp. My manual, together with vendor support was able to tell me how to do this.
However, I did export the registry to my external HD, just in case!
Not the sort of operation to do when you've had a few beers!
Thanks for your interest,
Mel66
