I have two computers, one has broadband and is running Win2000 Pro. The other is running Xp Pro.

The two computers are linked with two Ethernet cards in each and a crossover cable.

I have enabled Internet connection sharing for the broadband on Win2K, and have disabled the XP computer from dialing its own connection, but the XP computer just won't recognise that it can share the other PC's broadband connection.

It's not a problem with the cable, because Win 2000 can get documents off the other computer without any fuss.

It's not a problem with the shortcut on the start menu - I've checked that.

Can anybody help?
Thankyou.

firstly, see if the XP machine can "ping" anything on the web...e.g. "ping yahoo.com"

this will establish if it's a browser issue or an IP setup issue.

if you can ping successfully, check the IE settings:
Tools --> Internet Options --> Connections --> Lan Settings --> TICK CHECKBOX "automatically detect settings"

Also, check your XP is not assigned a static IP - ICS requires it gets an IP address automatically.

<marc> i wonder what will happen if i press this...[pc][ul][li]please give feedback on what works / what doesn't[/li][li]need some help? how to get a better answer: faq581-3339[/li][/ul]

ur problem is so simple and u made it complex, jst buy a 4-port hub and connect the two computers in it, remove the crosscable and that's it.....

zasiwe24: this would not solve the problem.
the physical network is fine, a hub would have no effect on the problem. the problem is probably one of IP routing.

mdm708: if you want to spend some money, spend it on a combined router/switch (about $40ish), network it this way:
ISP --- modem --- router --- PCs

Routers do simplify sharing a network connection - basically all the work ICS does, they do instead. They're (normally!) much easier to configure.
But ICS will do the job satisfactarily - and why spend money if you don't need to!?

One thought - make sure the client PC is set to "obain an IP address automatically" - ICS will only work with dynamic addresses, it won't work with static IPs.

The WinXP Computer already has 'obtain an IP address automatically' in its settings, but I've never heard of 'pinging' before - could you please tell me how to do it?

Thankyou for your help

Pinging didnt work. It says 'ping request could not find host Please check the name and try again.

Thankyou for your help

ok now ping 66.218.71.198 (this is a IP of yahoo)

"Jack of all trades. Master of none."
[americanflag]

Now it says:

'pinging 66.218.71.198 with 32 bytes of data:

Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.

Ping statistics for 66.218.71.198:
Packets: Sent = 4, Recieved = 0, Lost = 4 <100% loss>.'

can you go back to the dos prompt:

type "ipconfig /all" and post the results here.
btw, post the results for both machines - this may help locate the prob.

e.g.
Code:
C:\WINDOWS\DESKTOP>ipconfig /all

mdm708 - can you double check your ipconfig?

you've posted IP address: 255.255.255.0; now I'm guessing this is in fact your subnet mask.

Could you post the following section please?
Code:
        DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes
        IP Address. . . . . . . . . : 10.5.181.215
        Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
        Default Gateway . . . . . . : 10.5.181.254

Cheers...

Dear manarth,

You were right. I don't know why I got that wrong...

DHCP Enabled: Yes
IP Address: 192.168.0.207
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.0.1

Sorry!

Thankyou for your help

OK - if only it were simple :)
Your XP settings look sensible.
Your WAN settings look sensible... albeit I don't know if Freeserve demand dynamic or static allocated IP addresses - at the moment, you're set on static... all of freeserve's dialup settings indicate you should be using a DYNAMIC IP address.
unfortunately their webpage does not say if broadband customers should be on dynamic or static IPs - call / email freeserve to check it out.
Btw don't admit you're sharing the connection: freeserve state you should only connnect 1 PC. yuh, right, whatever. :)

Having said that - the freeserve connection settings aren't wildly out, so this may not affect your problem in the slightest.

As a test, try "ping 192.168.0.1" from your XP machine.

This is pinging the IP address of the Win2k machine.
Because it's on the same subnet, there is no routing involved; this SHOULD produce a result (even if there's a wAN problem). If it doesn't, there's something dreadfully wrong!

For the sake of accurate troubleshooting, try pinging that address - I'll be very surprised if it DOESN'T work, but in troubleshooting, it pays to take it every painfully slow step of the way.

If that works, go to your w2k machine and try "ping 66.218.71.198" (yahoo's IP address), then try "ping 192.168.0.207" (your XP machine's IP)

FYI - these steps are establishing WHERE the communication breakdown is occuring.
You're trying to ping the WAN connection from the server, to ensure the DSL connection is running the way it should be; you're also ensuring the XP machine is talking to the W2k machine and vice versa.

If you have any firewalls running, it may be worthwhile disabling them until the connection is running; they can interfere with connection sharing.

The following pongs worked with 0% loss:

Win2K with Yahoo
Win2K with XP Computer
XP Computer with Win2K

The following did not work:

XP Computer with Yahoo (predictably)

I can verify that I read in another forum that Freeserve Broadband provide dynamic IP addresses. Will this affect the problem?

Thankyou for your help
mdm708

P.S. The broadband is working fine on the Win2K computer.

Thankyou for your help
mdm708

mdm708 - you certainly have an interesting problem!

the only thing I can identify on your system as "wrong" is your freeserve address is given statically, when it's meant to be dynamic - that said, as you can obviously access the internet, I cannot see how this could be the cause of the problem.

<experimentally>
try making the freeserve settings dynamic
(go to the TCP/IP settings for freeserve - set to "obtain an IP address automatically)
</experimentally>

I'm not confidant that will fix the prob though...

I'd suggest uninstalling ICS then reinstalling.

provides a good guide on setting ICS up.

Here's the instructions to the wizard to set the XP client up

Here's the guide to setting up the ICS server on Win2000

I hope this helps!
