Hi all The broadband connection drops out unexpectadley. However the Modem is still connected and a connection on the computer is still current however it drops the dial in connection.
I looked on the event viewer and this was the issue close to the time.
"The Service Control Manager tried to take a corrective action (Restart the service) after the unexpected termination of the Windows Management Instrumentation service, but this action failed with the following error:
An instance of the service is already running."
I am not sure that this is the problem.
Any ideas???
Thanks Chris

You have DSL synch with the Central Office, and you have a valid ethernet connection to the modem. But your Central Office has lost the connection to the internet, briefly, from its DSLAM(s).

This is pretty normal; they are likely doing some work on the DSL service. Call your ISP and ask.

Your Event logs do not pertain to your DSL issue. The Service Control Manager believed your WMI service had stopped, so it tried to restart it. But found it was already running.

Do not worry about it.

Hi bcastner
Tried that they said everything was OK.
Another curious thing that happens is when it does loose connection the Taskbar unlocks and reduces back to the default size and there is a lot of action in the HDD for half a minute.
I have uddated my virus checker and done a complete scan.

I do not think it is a virus.
Are you using any instant messenger program? If so, the activity from that alone would cause your taskbar changes.

What would be decisive would be to study your modem logs, if the brand of modem keeps a connection log.

Head to Broadbandreports.com, and find the Forum for your ISP. Read the FAQs there and ask your question again:

Hi
Hmmm tried to find a log file that changed at the time it last disconnected but there was nothing. The interesting thing is that when my son has hi HDD in the same PC it stays connected.Indicating the problem is in the OS.
