Hi

I have an problem that seems to occur randomly.

Setup:pC, winxppro, BTVoyager adsl 105, ISP AOL. All drivers etc uptodate.

Connection is directly through the voyager and avoids using the AOL dialer software. However, every now and then i get the message that the line is engaged..well its not...but I can't get the modem connect. BUT if I use the AOL dialer software to logon it works ok. Also if i reset the pc theres a chance that the direct connection through the modem will begin working again.

All drivers are uptodate and I have even checked one by one software and hardware config/conflict problems with zero results. The only thing that seems constant is if the firewall loads into the sys tray directly after the link status for the modem it seems to be ok, ( clutching at straws i think ).

Anyways if anyone has had this problem could they please post a fix. Thanks

Steve, from what I've been reading, it is recommended that you do not connect the modem through an extension. And to have the phone connections separate but together. So Sky on one, modem on another, and phones off another. Each = 1 REM so you have 4. Are you is the US? I also understand that the max is 5 here, but 4 in the UK.

So to test, I'd remove the fax/phone and extension.

Thanks Helen. I was aware that the extention could prove to be a problem but until now everything has been ok.

However, strange day today. I decided to remove all the drivers and re-install the whole lot again. Now I have done this on several occasions without success. Today is different.

I now have this situation.

On boot up I have a connection named "Local Area Connection 2 " which is the Globespan ADSL LAN modem. This connects at start up and provides an instant "ON" the net connection. So My permanent connection is now working as it is supposed to.

However, Programs such as Outlook Express ( I use both Express and Office Outlook ) needed a connection to the net as it does not recognise the "always connected state".

So I have created a new connection called "Broadband Connection" and It works through that.

Having 2 connection icons in the sys tray seems a bit over the top, but it does seem to have cured the problem. Which in its self is great but It would be nice to understand whats gone wrong/right in the whole situation.

hhmmm, I don't understand why you are having problems with your email handler. I use Outlook Express and Outlook on many different machines with LAN broadband, which is always on, and there isn't a problem.

Am I misunderstanding you?

Have you checked your Internet connection options? Did you have to reset this when you removed your drivers? Have you ever set this up manually or has it been accomplished through some set-up program that came with something else you have, like AOL or something with the BT Voyager?

Helen thanks for replying again.

All the drivers are installed automatically from zip files I have. Yes there was a reset after removing the drivers. I removed everything and started from fresh. Several start up and shut downs later this is where I am at.

When the pc boots up I have a LAN connection that connects. If I want to actually go onto the net then the softaware I am using say outlook browser etc will produce a pop up box for me to say ok too. This then talks with AOl and connects. I have set these to automatic and so they don't really interfere with any operations I have.

I guess for me this has resolved the original issue as since doing this everything seems to be ok connection wise. I have had no failures to connect or line engaged messages.

There is one other thing I have done however which has made life a bit easier and readers here may like to know about.

AOL installs a dialer (AOLDIAL) and a whole bunch of other stuff at start up. I removed the aoldial.exe file from startup through msconfig.

This has had an great effect of start up and shut down. Dialer always had an error at shutdown.

Obviously not the ideal situation but one that works.
