I want to replace my Arcserve Version 9 with Brightstor 11.5. I already have Windows Client Agents on most all of my servers but they are from older versions. Do I have to upgrade my Windows Client agents (I'm not talking about Exchange for SQL, only Windows Server) on all my boxes or will the older ones work with 11.5? Thanks.

Hi,
This is something that I have never understood. What are the Windows Client agents for?

However, I have been backing up remote server for more than five years now without any WCA and it has been working fine.

Try it without the agent. If it works, you've saved the company some money and you can buy us all a round of beer :D

I hope you find this post helpful.

GSC,

I have been told that Brightstor will not backup the System State without the client agent. System state components include the following:

Active Directory (domain controller only)
System Volume
Certificate Server Database
COM+ database
Windows Registry
System and boot files

Have you restored a server without the System State files?

Thanks.

Ahh yes! That is correct, now I remember.

We haven't restored a server from tape yet. If a server crashes we don't want to restore a fauly system (if the problem is software related) we've always re-installed the server and restored the user data.

I hope you find this post helpful.

GSC
