Brightstor v9 Media Errors, SENSE data included 1

Ok, I have been fighting this Brightstor/Compaq problem for months now and am about ready to quit my job and work for 7-11. Here are the details:

Server: Compaq DL-380 G2
Library: Compaq StorageWorks MSL5026 w/ 2 drives
Media: Maxell and Quantum 110/220 SDLT-1
OS: Windows 2000 SP4 all patches applied
Backup Software: Brightstor 9 with all patches and device support updates applied
Library firmware is 423, drive firmware is 75, the latest.

I have contacted CA and HP on this matter and each points to the other as the problem so they are useless. What happens is the classic media errors, which occur at random across old and new tapes. Sometimes they happen, others they don't, even on the same tapes. EC's are UNRECOVERABLE DATA ERROR, MEDIA MISCOMPARE, HARDWARE ERROR, CONTROLLER FAILURE, etc. Half of my backups are passing every day, the other half fail every day. The backups passing have hundred of GB's backed up, which indicates to me the drives are working. Any of the backups can fail, not just the same ones, so it doesn't seem to care what magazine each tape is in. Here is a recent tape log, while I as attempting an erase:

I have disabled the Remote Storage Service, disabled the tape drive and library in device manager per other suggestions here, tried new media, applied all patches, changed SCSI cable and host adapter, performed diags on the library, all to no avail. What sounds like the culprit here?

Have you looked at faq478-4043 and faq478-3987?

There are a lot of things that can cause the first but the second is usually due to a software conflict. The BAB Tape Engine sends a command and then some other application comes along and sends a different command to the defice. The result is when the Tape Engine goes back to the device the result is as shown above.

Make sure the tape drives and library are disabled as per above faq, Removable Storage service is disabled, and in the HP/Compaq Management Agents (found in Control Panel) select SCSI Information and click remove.

could someone please explain a little more on the steps in diabling the scsi and tape drivers within windows? We are encountering the same issues with out HP tape library, and are looking for ways to resolve the issue. i have disabled the removable storage service, and have removed the SCSI information from the HP Agents, looking for what else I should disable??

another hint is to disable the CIM Storage Agent if any.

We've done all the above, we've had IBM here countless times testing hardware, replacing hardware. We have a Ultrium 3583, with 4 lto drives installed, also 42 slots. Running Brightstor v9 with SAN option, Tape Option.

Two months ago, IBM had replaced the SCSI manager and Logic board on our library, problem solved, 2 months later back to square one, yesterday they replaced same parts and issue is resolved. Our logs looked just like the one above with the ERROR 6300, ERROR 8020, and a few more Brightstor errors. While the IBM guy was here yesterday, I called CA Support and let them duke it out.

Hello everyone... so if I'm reading this right...
I should disable the CHANGER MANAGEMENT driver and the TAPE DRIVE drivers? (I have a STK L80 with 2 LTO drives).
I've disabled the drivers and tested the config with some test backups but nothing beats the real thing for the backup tonight.
What I'm afraid of is that I'm still wandering in the dark on this one... I just wish someone from CA could tell me definitively what the hell is wrong!

can't definitively say what is wrong until it has been fixed. Just looking at this post it is clear the the problems look alike but the solutions are different.

I have the same problem.
I use an Compaq ML530 with Win2000 Advanced server SP4 and
compaq SSL2020 AIT changer(1 drive/19 slots)
i use Brightsore v 11.
I have now unloaded all related win drivers and compaq agents/services.
I will post back if it solves my problem.
Has this helped any others?

Also, for those having these types of problems on a SAN, make sure that all servers on that SAN ar participating in the ARCserve SAN have a role, 1 Primary server and all others are Distributed servers.
Next, check the zoning of the SAN, and make sure all ports are accounted for. Next, you can also zone the SAN on a One-to-One basis, so each server sees only ther ports of the Library and drives and not the ports of the other servers on the SAN. This will make sure the datapaths are not affected by a fibre based event from a bad GBic in one of the other fibre cards on the SAN...

I was wondering if you had made any progress correcting your strange media errors? Our environments are not exact, but the problems are very similar. Every night about 1/4 of the media comes up as "UNRECOVERABLE DATA ERROR" and some of the jobs fail. But the tapes can be inventoried, erased and used again the next night with no problems, but to no avail other jobs will fail with same error. I have even tried to format with tape name for nightly run and place in the save set. It will attempt to use this tape and error out then errors again on a blank. And the puzzling part is that its not always the same job or tapes!*?@ It is about to drive us nuts. I did run the utilities (dbcheck and dbfix) on the databases with no errors returned. I've done everything that the other posts recommended as well.

My question is with everyone having similar problems, has anyone come up with an answer to all these nagging problems? Any information will be greatly appreciated!!!!

We were running a slightly different config from the original post - Brightstore 11 and windows 2003, but had the similar problems with inconsistent backups. Turned out to be a plug/play issue .....

I know this is way after the fact but I had all kinds of problems with my cpq msl5000 tape loader. turned out the hp ultra scsi card with the lsimptnw.nlm driver was the prob lem. switched to onboard scsi card it worked fine, replace hp 320 ultra card with adaptec 320 worked great. arcserve finally confirmed they have the same problem with the lsimptnw driver.

try changing the scsi card to a different brand so it will force a different driver.
