Hi there,

We're running Brightstor Arcerve Backup 11.5 on a W2K server.
The folder \program files\ca\brightstor arcserve backup\database contains 13 files named ASMSG.001 -> ASMSG.010 , ASMSG.400 -> ASMSG.402. Each file is approx 2 GB, total size just over 24 GB.
What are these files and how can we reduce the size of them ?

Thanks in advance.

Bart

I read the article.
Tried 'dbdefrag -a -L casdb;admin;secret asmsg'. This always returns "error -4".
Tried to initialize the database ( only Asmsg ).
Got error 'Failed to initialize database ( asjob ). Please close all other brightsor Arcserve Backup applications and try again.'
Note : I asked initialization of Asmsg, the error is about Asjob. All other Arcserve applications are closed.

I tried to initialize all databases ( Enterprise Server Admin - Database tab - Operation / Initialize database - All databases ).
Failed.
When I look in the databases folder, I still see them with their original size.

install ARCserve to another system and then copy over the database directory after clearing out the database directory on the production server.

David is talking about installing Arcserve purely to extract a copy of an empty database back to your old system. Not moving the whole Arcserve system.

I always keep a zipped copy of an empty database handy for situations such as these.

David, Neil,

As I had no other system at hand, I uninstalled and installed Arcserve on the existing system.
As soon as Arcserve was 'up and running', I made a copy of the 'database' folder to avoid similar problems in the future.
Everything is OK now.
Bottom line is, unfortunately, that the database could not be recovered.

Thanks for the tips.
