Hello,

I having a problem with the exchange agent, its running in a Windows 2003 R2 member server all service packed up, Exchange 2003 SP2.

I loaded the agent up exactly as it says in the documentation, I configured an account (dbagent)I was notified it was placed in the appropriate groups etc, I have also ran through the configuration wizard without problem and restarted the service. And yet, when I expand the exchange agent in modify job, it asks for a username and password, I enter DOMAINNAME\dbagent and enter the password, it always fails to log into agent. I get round it by hitting cancel, the backup job always fails with E8601 Failed to connect to agent and I dont get an exchange backup. The service is running.

So I went to services to see what the RPC agent was running under, and it was logging as the brightstor account (the account all the other brightstor services run under), so I changed it to DOMAINNAME\dbagent, entered the password and restarted the service, still the situation remains the same.

I dont really know where to go from here, so I am hoping someone will have an idea as to what is going on.

I am thinking of changing the account that the exchange agent runs under to run under the brightstor account instead, though I am not sure what good it will do.

Thanks in advance for any info.
Regards,
Paul.

Hi,

I think that your problem will be solved if you configure the exchange agent to run under the brightstor account. The issue is that you have two accounts. My bet is that they brightstor account is configured in the server admin security credentials. So your using one account for the server admin and another for the backup.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Hello,

Thanks for getting back. I actually ran a separate backup, backing up one mailbox and it worked, so I resubmitted my rotation job and it now appears to be working, so I am not sure what went on there. For sure I will be keeping my eye on it.

Regards,
D.

i had a similiar thing with backup exec. brick level mailbox backups only work with least permissions, and whole backups needed full admin permissions. maybe something to do with purgeing the logs, anyway, i got around by giving both users for both jobs full admin right.
Condtradicting all documentation, but that was i only way i could get a successful backup.
