I have a PE1750 with a Powervault 132T library. I am using Brightstor 11.1 and this is what is happening: After the server is up for a few days, when I go to login at the console, the screen will come up without icons or a task bar, then after 5-10 minutes the icons and task bar will start to partly appear but never fully materialize. This leads me to a reboot of the machine, there is no other thing for me do. I used the SCSI card that came with this tape library and installed it in the PE 1750. This server has 1GB Ram, Raid 1 with W2003 server. There are no errors in any logs, not event viewer nor Brightstor. Any ideas? This is driving me nuts!

How do you know it is ARCserve?
Have you used Performance Monitor to see what it taking up the resources?
Even Task Manager will show if it has a resource leak.
When the services are stopped do they release their memory?

Sorry to take so long to reply. It must be Arcserve as I took the drive off that server and everything is fine. I will try to see if there is a memory leak and I will run Performance Monitor as well. Thanks.

I don't for sure.

Yes and there is nothing unusual.

Even Task Manager will show if it has a resource leak.
Task Manager does not show anything unusual either, the only process that is on the high end is services.exe at 137,000 k.

When the services are stopped do they release their memory? Partly, the server is very slow and stopping services is nearly impossible, but when you finally do stop them the server never recovers.

The backup will run 4-5 times and then it totally brings the server to an almost halt. I even tried changing servers but same issue. I did get 2 NT SCSI errors, but that was it. Don't really know where to go next.

So far from what has been entered it is my opinion that ARCserve is the cause only in that it taxes the system harder than anything else and that any other application that put as much strain on resources would have the same effect.

Find out why on a system with 1gb ram and nothing taking up a lot of memory the server is very slow and stopping services nearly impossible. Since you have two systems with the same problem ck for common applications as a place to start. But other than that I don't know what to recommend. Performance Monitor can monitor every part of a computer better than any other application and since it did not find anything...

Just an idea but it might be cheaper to work around the problem rather than troubleshoot it. Just by a low end generic white box system and move ARCserve there.
