Hi,
We are currently running Brightstor Arcserve 11.1 (Build 3200) on a Windows 2003 server machine. It is set up to back up itself and two remote servers. The backup job runs a full backup each Monday - Friday night and backs up to an HP Storageworks Ultrium 215 LTO drive (one tape). We have a two week rotation of tapes.

For some reason, in the last month or so, every Monday night the backup asks for a second tape. The rest of the week runs fine - only on Monday nights does this happen. I have checked, and the same amount of data is being backed up each night. We have changed out both Monday tapes, but it still occurs.

This particular backup takes about 12 hours to complete normally, and the tape is usually asked for on the last remote server to be backed up, so by the time we notice it needs a tape, the backup times out and the job fails on the last target.

Any ideas on why this would happen, and only one night a week?

Thanks in advance for any insight!

Tara

Is it the same job that runs each day?
Are there the same # of sessions for each day?
Does the backup take the same amount of time each day?
ck the # of files, directories, & mbs for each session.
How much time is there from the time of the span until the end of the job?

Please see answers below:

Is it the same job that runs each day? Yes
Are there the same # of sessions for each day? Yes
Does the backup take the same amount of time each day? Roughly - around 12 hours
ck the # of files, directories, & mbs for each session. Sizes are the same each day, give or take a little bit. There have been days when the job doesn't ask for a new tape and the total files, size, etc. was actually greater than on a day when it did ask for a new tape.

How much time is there from the time of the span until the end of the job? I'm not sure what you mean by "from the time of the span..."

Thank you!!

Tara

check the database media view to see if there are media or soft write errors for tapes which can eat up space on tape.
