Here is the situation that I am in, or should I say a friend is in and I am trying to help them. They live in the county where dialup gets maybe 32k if lucky, their brother lives next door (1400 ft. away), he has high speed internet through satellite. My friend wants to tap off of his internet connection to get to the net. I figure a couple of decent WAP's at either side setup in bridged mode, however, the length is the problem. Does anyone have any recommendations for antenas that each could setup on the sides of their houses and hookup to say a Linksys, Cisco, DLINK, Netgear WAP?

Thanks for any help you could give.

Your friend can use a Cisco AP350 with an 3 dBi patch antenna attached to the window of the house with the satelite connection. At the other house use a Cisco WGB350, if more than one PC will be connected, or a Cisco PC350 card, if only one workstation. A 3 dBi patch antenna attached on a window and connected to either the WGB350 or PC350 card will also be good on this side. However, one must be able to see the other house from window to window.

There are other product besides Cisco that can work if you get neat patch antennas to avoid ugly looking gadgets attaced to your walls. I will use either Proixm or 3COM products as alternatives to Cisco. Most of the other products out there are to weak to span the 1400 ft.

1400 feet with 3Com external antennas shouldn't be a problem. For cost considerations start with Cisco at the top end of pricing and work your down through 3Com to the lower end products like SMC. SMC is not "pricy" and has access points that allow external antennas. Jerry Pannell
