Hi all,
This may be long-winded but I really need some help. Recently purchased 3 Velocity Micro PC's with Asus MB-3.0 gig processor, Codogen 500w PS, 1 gig mushkin ram, front & rear firewire and usb ports, etc. I had them all set up and networked and all were running fine. Plugged in a WD external 160 gig hd in the front usb port and the pc shut down. Unable to reboot, just dead. Mfr sent new MB which technician installed, no help. They were going to send new ps, but in the interim, i plugged a canon digital cam into another pc (front usb port) and that computer died. (Have NOT plugged anything into the 3rd machine). Any ideas what would cause this? They, Velocity Micro are sending 3 new computers with Intel D915GAV MB's and Antec 430w PS's. Suggestions or ideas on the probs would be really appreciated. Thanks much.

Could be incorrectly connected USB headers causing power to be routed back to the board. That seems to be the common element with the issues

Not sure about that norty303 and I am not really that technically sound, lol, but when the tech came to install the new mobo, he checked the connections on the usb ports and they could only be connected one way. Thanks tho for the reply.

Still possible. *IF* in the manufacturing process, the headers are installed backwards, this COULD and (would pretty likely happen) happen. I would have Velocity Micro check with Asus DIRECTLY, and have *them* look into it.

dolfan59, i believe these guys are on the right track.
Certainly appears that whenever something gets plugged into the front usb2.0 port the mobo dies. Points to the usb2.0 connection being bad somehow.

Good advice + great people = tek-tips

Thanks for all the help folks. Sorry for the delay in answering as I am the one man tech show and it is tax season to boot. All is now well as Velocity Micro replaced all 3 machines since the mobo was changed out and that didn't help. Now we have the same basic machines but with Intel mobo's and Antec power supplies. All 3 up and running well. Thanks again.
