Just had a very strange situation, Manager on 4.2 caused all sorts of DHCP issues.

Customer site running SBS 2003 and DHCP

First I had a couple of HP printer displaying servcie errors, on investigations this was caused by a rouge DHCP server on the LAN, then my SBS server shut down DHCP, the event logs showed the manager pc as the conflicting DHCP server.

If have disabled the Bootp option on the manager pc and everything has gone back to normal. The strange thing is I have never had this problem in any of the other SBS sites I have installed in.

One to watch out for, not sure why this manager pc should be different to all the others I have installed.

Known problem

You need to change the registry on the sbs server

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DHCPServer\Parameters] "DisableRogueDetection"=dword:00000001

This will prevent the sbs server to responde on dhcp/bootp requists like it does

Yes now that one however that wont help with the HP network printers.

I don't know about the printers :)
Turning it off is for you the best solution
If you need tftp then use a thirt party tftp server
The bootp is only needed for pushing software in to the ipo when it is out of software so turning it off does not harm

It only surfaces when SBS is rebooted and Manager is running on the LAN with BOOTP/TFTP turned on.

Sorry Jamie, That's not the way I have experienced it

This is an issue that many people have experienced. I've had a case with Avaya - who have blamed it on the MS DHCP server and Dell Laptop combination (i.e. they couldn't replicate it in their labs) It is definitley an issue with manager as the DHCP server won't restart until the offending manager is shut...

The root cause is the similarity between BOOTP and DHCP. The IP Manager responds to a DHCP packet and the MS DHCP (correctly) shuts down. (the registry entry alters this shutdown behaviour).

The best workaround (that andy has identified) is to turn of BOOTP and TFTP on the manager. Under normal use, you should not need the BOOTP service anyway. As the TFTP server in Manager is not very good, I'd suggest you use a 3rd party one for all TFTP requestd.

Take Care

Matt
I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone.
My wish has come true. I no longer know how to use my telephone.

Maybe Avaya should make a separate bootp option under the preferences !
