Does anyone know how to make an NT 4 server boot up and logon without the presence of a keyboard? I have a server that will eventually be deployed in an environment where a keyboard is surplus to requirements, and although I can get it to login automatically (AutoAdminLogon registry key, etc) if i physically remove the keyboard the server will not auto-logon.

Please help!!!! I have achieved this before, but i can't remember how!!!

Hello Levi,

Does your computer boot at all without the keyboard ?
I am not too sure this is your solution but just in case...
Into the bios, there should be a setting that could be changed from "halt on all errors" to "all but keyboard"...
But again, that is if the computer will not boot and won't be of any help if you are already passed this...
Let me know. S. Gagner

I have set the bios so that the PC will boot without a keyboard, and the PC itself does load the operating system. The problem is that without the keyboard, the service control manager reports an error (the lack of keyboard) and so the PC doesn't follow through with the auto-login, defaulting instead to the beloved 'press ctrl+alt+del to login' window. When this PC is finally deployed it will be in a box by the side of the road without a keyboard, so overcomming this problem is 'fairly' critical.

Any help would be appreciated...

I haven't tried these, but I'm guessing it'll do the trick...
Edit HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Keyboard Layout\Preload, and change the value to 0.

You may also have to do the same in HKEY_CURRENT_USER as well.

Also, go to Control Panel, devices, and set the i8042 Keyboard to disabled, then reboot.

Let me know if either of these work.
Kudos

Thanks for your reply.
There was a reason why FTEdit didnt work for me the first time. Ive found why the changes where not being kept. someone had changed the permissions for the administrator and did not allow them full control.
(too many cooks!!!)

thanks anyway.
