We are working on building out a Disaster Recovery data center that is remote from our production data center. We had been planning to recover the hosts from replicated NIM mksysb images, but our business users are looking to get systems back more quickly. I have been looking at the thin server/COSI diskless server feature available in 5.3-05, but it seems a bit complicated.
Someone suggested that we could boot our DR machines from replicated boot volumes, which would certainly be the quickest way of all. We boot many of our systems from SAN, so replication itself would not be a big problem. Our SAN is virtualized behind an IBM SVC, so all disk looks like IBM vpaths.
Has anyone tried this? Does it work? We are a little concerned that the boot sector won't make it through the replication. We're hoping to test this early next week, but anyone's experiences would be most welcome.
