I have a Pent4 2.667 GHz dekstop that is having problems while booting up. The video card check runs fine but when it gets to the BIOS startup, it starts having problems. It displays the BIOS information and the processor info but then it stops. It doesn't run any memory tests. I thought it might be the RAM so I bought a new stick and the same thing happens. I actually got it to boot up fine but that was after a dozen or so power cycles. Once I was finished with that session and restarted the PC, it returned to freezing before the memory tests. Any ideas? I'm afraid it's the mobo that's the problem.

The fact that you can get it to start, albeit after cycling the power a number of times, points towards the PSU as the problem.

Try changing the PSU for a known good one of the same power rating or higher. Also, don't forget to check that the PSU's extra 4-pin power connector is firmly plugged into the mobo socket.

Have you downloaded and installed the latest BIOS and chipset drivers?

I'm wouldn't think it's the PSU since the video card boots up fine. Power must be getting to the Mobo if it boots up. All the fans are running as expected as well.

I might not have the latest and greatest BIOS but it is fairly current (if not the latest, the one before that).

illini just because it boots doesnt mean that the psu is good one of the lines may be bad or you may have part of it going bad and it just happens to kick in every once in a while. One of the bad things u can do is continuely power cycle your computer try and get a replacement psu or borrow one from another computer if you can...

Remember free things are fun but they can come with an emotional price tags..

Hi,

My Toshiba A105 laptop doesn't allow me to boot from a external USB drive. It does sell a bootable floppy drive which I haven't bought yet. I am looking for a way to boot from a cd or floppy and if I have Windows on a USB drive, I would like to boot into USB drive and not use hd inside the Toshiba laptop.

Just for everyone's information, the source of my bootup problems was because of the Ipod being plugged into the USB port during bootup. Once the Ipod was unplugged, everything booted up normally.
