Hi THERE !

I have problems when booting my NT 4.0 server.Error message is follows: BOOT:Couldn't find NTLDR please insert another disk. I was trying to run repait process, but it won't copy ntldr file. Do someone has any idea, where could be the problem?

Thanx,

Syky

NTLDR corrupted...common problem....

In order for Boot loader to start NTLDR must be in the root of the C Drive. If this file is missing you will get this error message. To fix this simply copy the NTLDR from the CD or the Floppies to the root of the C drive. If you are copying from the CD ROM, you will find NTLDR in the I386 directory and can copy it by going to the CD ROM Drive and entering:
copy \i386\ntldr c:\

Or, if you have a floppy installation set, you can find NTLDR as NTLDR.$ on disk 2. To expand this file and copy it to the correct location, type the following:
expand ntldr.$ c:\ntldr

Unless you're running on FAT filestore, you'll need to slave the drive to another machine or use something like to copy to ntfs filestore.

What did you try on the repair process? (you can't see it copying ntldr - in fact not sure it does - just repairs the boot sector - it you choose that option on its own - which you should).

Some history would be useful too - how did this happen?

I know this sounds obvious, but have you checked if there is either a bootable CD , or a floppy disk in the respective drives

Another possibility, the BOOT.INI file is pointing to a different drive or partition than the one you are trying to use.

I would check the obvious first as oisnds mentioned. Once I installed a backup HP dat drive. The stupind thing changed to boot order when I upgraded the firmware. It is not fun to see that message on a production Exchange box with hundres of mailboxes. Sure enough checking the boot.ini revealed the problem after several hourse. I belive you must unhide, hide and archive the file back after mod if that should be the case.

From:
Most people don't realize that you can create a bootable NT 4.0 floppy, but it can be a life saver if you ever wipe out your boot menu or MBR by mistake.

To create the floppy, log-in to NT and insert a blank or expendable diskette into drive A:. Right-click the floppy disk icon in My Computer or Explorer and choose "Format." Format the disk: every disk you format with NT is bootable, by the way, you don't have to copy any system files or manually make it bootable in any way.

Now, copy the files NTLDR, BOOT.INI, and NTDETECT.COM from the root directory of your startup drive onto the floppy and you've created a bootable NT system floppy. Reboot your computer to test it: you should get the same startup menu you get when you boot normally.

Keep the floppy in a safe place--it will come in handy some day.
