I have a machine with windows 2000 service pack 1 installed. After installation of service pack 2 i can't boot in any mode. The only way to solve the problem and boot is to RE-install windows. I need service pack 2 to test beta version of Visual Studio .net. Any ideas??? My motherboard is asus a7-v, the boot disk is connected to the primary ide-66 controller, i have a second disk on the ata-100 controller

Some more info: no blue screen. The progress bar stops after 4 or 5 ticks. When trying other boot modes it stops after "disk(0).....partition(1)\system" line.

A couple of stock answers here: did you install the updated chipset and ata drivers from Asus before installing SP2? when you installed SP 2 did you do express install or did you download the entire service pack and install it locally? I've seen problems with the express install, particularly on the Asus A7V line of MoBo's.

I did install the ata drivers from Asus before installing SP2 but not the updated chipset. I installed the SP2 i found on the CD of Visual Studio .net Component Update. Do you think i should install the chipset drivers???

Probably, yes. Question (just because I hate to assume): we are talking about an Athlon system, yes? VIA KT133 or 133a chipset? If yes you ought to be able to download the 4-in-1 updater from via (
Also, the SP2 you used came bundled with Visual Studio? What is the date on it?

We are talkin about an Athlon system with via kt133 chipset.
The SP2 came bundled with Visual Studio, i don't have the cds right here: I will check and post you the date of SP2. I will try re-installing win 2000 + 4-in-1 via driver and THEN sp2. I will let you know (maybe next monday: it takes more or less 2 hours to install everything and it's friday 19.15 PM here in italy :) ...). Thank you very much.

P.S. Are there different versions of SP2??

No, to my knowledge there are not different versions, other than language-specific ones. Are you possibly using an english version on an italian-language version OS, or vice-versa? My only reason for asking for the date was curiosity- SP2 being relatively new and all that.

I've run in to numerous problems with SP2 on athlon machines/via chipset mobo's. I keep hoping it's just me, but you are the fourth person I've conversed with in recent weeks who started having problems after installing SP2.

I have also had problems with SP2 with Intel machines as well. Sp2 is a pain and it has never worked for me. I had to reinstall 2k from scratch to fix the problem.

That's been my experience, yes- I am at SP 1 now with no intention of moving up until they fix this thing.

SP2 date is 07/05/2001. I am installing English version of SP2 on an english version of w2k. I tried to install via 4-in-one driver but it did not work. After sp2, when i boot, w2k hangs at the 3rd step of progress bar (in the char mode initial screen).

Yes, also for me The only solution is to reinstall it from scratch (as i said also safe mode does not work at all...), and i would be happy to remain at SP1 but Visual Studio .net requires SP2 to work properly...

Well, running out of ideas here. A few people have suggested disabling ATA100 mode in the system BIOS will relieve the problem. Worth a try even if there is a performance hit.

I also own an Athlon system and as soon as I installed the service pack 2, my system did the exact same thing. I couldn't reboot. Had to shut the machine off to get it to come back on. I finally uninstalled the service pack and it has been working fine since. There even was a note at Microsoft's website for the download that says some people are having hangups at reboot, so they recommmended doing the backup files. Which I did. So I don't know why they continue to put out crummy service packs when they know there is an issue with them. What ever happened to quality?

That is Microsoft for you :) I know that is a sort of a rude remark but hey

That's incredible... I disabled ultra ata 100 but i could not boot... And i think i will not test .net framework... Where can i get microsoft support or let them know my bug???

You can offer a bug report through the web at the microsoft homepage. As for overseas tech support, ummm, uhhh...

max70, there is a thread in this forum on eneabling UDM66 mode on Itel chipsets. Might want to check it out.

I tried to search at microsoft homepage but i could not find the bug report page... Only PAY PER ACCIDENT options available... I will read UDM66 thread... Thanks

Please, when you find a solution, let me know. I have a A7V mb and had a hell of a time getting SP to install, now on the third attempt I am stuck just after the login screen. Please advise.

I have w2k pro on a micron millenia. I had always updated to the latest patch whenever it's possible. It was running sp2 without any problem.
Then yesterday, I decided to roll back to an early image, dated may with sp1. Machine was function without any problem. However when I update to sp2, the machine hang exactly as you guys describe. I tried installing sp2 from windowsupdate web page and download the complete package to my local drive. They all hang.

Guys if sp1 works fine for you do not install sp2. YOu guys would be better of not installing it. I have not installed sp2 becoz i do not see a need for it. Microsoft prolly are fixing the bugs but they won't admit becoz they are afraid to tell you it has a bug ( I found that out through experience ) Good Luck !
