I've come across this twice in the last 2 months now, so I thought it might help someone. In both cases the customer was running Win98 and got a virus. They installed McAfee Virus Scan and after they scanned for viruses and went to reboot, the system would fail to boot. It just stays on the splash screen forever. Also will not boot into safe mode.

Here's the problem> Boot to dos from a floppy. Use the EDIT command to bring up autoexec.bat (A:> EDIT C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT). Look for a line at the end of the file that refers to McAfee and says something like ON ERRORCODE 0 PAUSE with some other things embedded in the line. Comment out this line, and save the file, then you should get a clean reboot.

Good ol' McAfee. They cripple your computer and don't give you any arror message or any indication of what's going on!

That's why I dumped them. Too many blue screens after superdat updates, failed boots, etc. Try Trend PC-cillin. It's much more sociable.

I use Trend's Online anti-virus section. More fun to play with and free. Plus doesn't take much room on your HD. =)

Btw, Norton sometimes has a problem booting up too. Usually I go to Safe Mode and to Run and type msconfig. I go to the startup and uncheck norton and that solves the problem. So maybe the anti-virus autoexec.bat problems are the same. Possibility.

Noisome
