i am trying to do a boot cdrom at the ok propt but it comes up with an error message. i can do a probe-scsi and it can see the drive etc.

many thanks in advance
Matt

i get a
cannot open boot device

im trying to install solaris 8 on a sparcstation20 (testing only)

is there a devalias for cdrom? If not, you will need to set it using nvalias. You may also tray boot cdrom0, or boot cdrom1. Sometimes there are other aliases.

You can see these aliases simply by typing:
ok> devalias

You can also set these by using devalias, but it won't stay accross system reboots. You have to use nvalias for that.

sorry forgot to mention
there is not usually a cdrom drive in the sytem and i have simply connected a drive to install sol 8 is there and commands i have to run to 'install' the drive in to the 'bios'????

matt

then you may have to set your cdrom alias. That can be done by:

nvalias cdrom /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/ide@3/cdrom@2,0:f

or something similar. You should be able to look at your output from probe-scsi and adjust the crom path accordingly.

Then you will be able to do a:

boot cdrom

what part is the scsi id???

sorry about this as i have never used solaris

I was thinking you had an ide cdrom. For a scsi cdrom teh command would be more similar to:

nvalias cdrom /iommu/sbus/espdma@4,8400000/esp@4,8800000/sd@5,0:d

All of teh above would be on the same line... It just wouldn't fit on one line on the post.

The ID of the command above is 5. So you can change out the 5 near the end to match you cdrom's scsi ID.

The default SCSI ID for the CDROM is 6
If the drive is set to this ok> boot cdrom should work.

cheers all works ok now and sol 8 installed boss happy!! sorted!!!
