Is there any way to boost win Me's performance? Also I was wondering if there was a way to backup the registry by using a simple batch file like you would in win98?

ShaithisDanoveur is right - INUNDATE Windows ME with RAM and everything seems to work better. SDRAM is getting inexpensive, it's also easy to install yourself. I run 256MB, but I'd like to try more (anybody want two PC 100 128MB DIMMS, cheap).

Incidentally - nothing helps performance like a well-defragmented hard drive.

Except, of course, a nice healthy caching DPT RAID controller ;)

Speaking of a well-defragmented hard drive, I found a groovy defragmenter today to share with the class. Joining Norton Speed Disk and Diskeeper is my new favorite toy, PerfectDisk 2000. Fantastic defrag utility, demo version available, good and fast, single pass (unlike Diskeeper).

You can find it at - for you Diskeeper users, I don't recommend installing this while you have Diskeeper installed, especially under NT/2K.

To help WinME running smoothly, you can adjust yourself the amount of virtual memory that windows use to build his swap file.

Do the follow :
1 - Open all your common applications to check how much memory is used by the system when all windows are open.

2 - Note down the amount of memory used.

3 - Set the Windows virtual memory settings to :
* Let me choose my own settings
* Set the Hard Drive setting to your fastest HD
* Set the minimum amount to 25% less than the amount note before
* Set the maximum amount to 30% to 45% more than the amount note before.

With this settings, you will assure that windows don't build a swap file of 500 Mo or more and that they don't try to only use your RAM to work...

It seems tedious and unnecessary to me to open all your applications and monitor the amount of "memory" they use.

I don't know if I can quite follow you John, but for virtual memory settings, I recommend you set the minimum and maximum settings to roughly 2.5 times the amount of RAM installed in the system. (128 MB; min=320mb max=320mb)

Also before making that change, you'll want to temporarily move the swap file over to another partition (or physical hard drive) and defragment the system partition (c:) before moving it back over. Personally, I just leave mine on another partition...
