I use Mozilla FireFox and occassional i will bookmark pages. I had a bunch saved up, then I went there the other day and POOF - they are all gone!

Where did they go, and how can I bring them back?

I don't know how to get them back, but for future reference you may want to get the Foxmarks add-on. Then you can sync your bookmarks on multiple computers and pull them down from a centralized location next time.

how do i know if i'm using a different profile? what does that mean?

A pretty good explanation of how to handle the situation is found at
In checking this out, I learned that it's not so easy to find an actual bookmarks file. I have 7 files that purport to have my bookmarks in .html format and none of them is current! They all date back to before I upgraded to FF3. And when I erased them all (after backing them up), Firefox reloaded with all my bookmarks, including one I just added to the URL above.

Firefox 3 handles bookmarks in a new and not terribly transparent manner, and backing them up is automatic. It saves the bookmarks from your first FF3 close of the day for five days. Bookmark information is stored within your profile and those backups, but there's no longer a discrete .html file to peer inside of.

Having said all this, it becomes imperative that you tell us whether you have upgraded to Firefox 3 or are still running Firefox 2! Your mileage and our advice will vary.
