Spec:
old AT motherboard
486? processor
32Mb RAM
Modem
Soundcard
Win98SE

I've just formatted c: and re-installed win98SE.
When it reaches 'Searching for non-plug and pray devices',
The system blue screens.
I've tried re-formatting C: and re-installing win,
but exactly the same prob.
Tried restarting, no.
Wiped bios, no.
Removed modem and sound card, still no.
The only other card in place the video card.
The PC was running win95 fine before.
How can I sort this??

thanks a lot for any help.

hksoftware,

Well, you did some good process of elimination steps there, but what about the HD. Since that is the only thing changing here right.

Sounds like a bad formatting. Try to re-format it again.

Why did you format and re-install anyway?

I ran into that problem a few times... don't know if it'll help you or not but I had to make sure all onboard hardware was enabled.

Good luck. ~ Whether you think you can or can't, you're right. Henry Ford~

The guy whos computer it was messed up win95, he says he didnt change anything.
The symtoms of that were:
Clicking on my computer opens 'find...', the file searcher.

ALL shortcuts have the default icons, (the windows flag in a white page).
I searched for *.* in the windows directory, looked full of files, they hadnt all been deleted, but i didn't thorougly check for deleted files.

Howdy:

Have you tried disabling the on-board BIOS) anti-virus program??

Murray

I have had a problem like this. Boot with a DOS disk and run c:>fdisk/mbr. Then run fdisk to make a new partition, and reformat your harddrive. Reinstall W98. This fixed my
problem.....maybe it would fix yours.

The bios AV was already disabled.
I've tried fdik, no luck.
I'll give fdisk /mbr a go...

Is the vga card by chance isa? if it is, do you have access to a pci video card? ~ Whether you think you can or can't, you're right. Henry Ford~

No, the video card is PCI.
I've put in as ISA one, but still the same.

You're probably running into some sort of compatibility with the mainboard. If it's a 486, you may be safer to cry uncle, format the machine again and try installing windows 95 again... ~ Whether you think you can or can't, you're right. Henry Ford~

I'm confused.
Did you replace the harddrive? If not the fdisk /mbr then fdisk will work unless there is harddrive problems.
The devices being found is a diferent issue. If it's the only issue then what is the new hardware for the system. A flash bios would be an option going foward. If there is no new hardware then try to install 95 again to see if you get the same problem first.
give me more info Let everything that have breath praise the Lord.

I don't have a copy of win95.
I tried changing the HDD, and removing all cards (except graphics card.)
I disabled all bios features.

karmic was probably right, the motherboard is probably just too old for win98.

In the end I just put another motherboard in,
those old AT motherboards are cheap as hell and I had one spare.
Thanks to everyone who helped.
