Hello everyone! I have a computer that has a CD-RW ( called Comp A,Win XP installed),so I moved a HD from another computer(Comp B/Win XP)to comp A so that I could write some files to a disk. As soon as I try to boot with the new HD in the computer A, a blue screen appears stating that I should "Remove any new installed HD or HD controllers, check your HD and make sure that it's properly terminated and configured, run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption then restart you computer" How come I can not boot a computer with a HD that was formatted and had the OS installed in a differnt computer?
COMP A: AMD 2Ghz, 512 MB memory, win XP Plus
COMP B: 500 Mhz HP, 128 MB memory, win XP.
TKS FOR ANYONE THAT CAN HELP!

Is the computer trying to boot from the drive that is from the other computer?
i.e comp A with both drive in it trying to boot from comp B's HDD?
XP can get upset if another drive is used to boot.

Michael

Michael, that is what I trying to do . But, why can the computer just read from a different HD ? Tks for your repply !

Basically, XP thinks it's being ported onto a new PC, and anti-theft kicks in.
Set it up with Comp A with both drives, but make sure that it boots from it's own hard drive. You might have to set comp A HD to master on the primary IDE channel to make sure. Possibly adjust the bios to ignore boots from teh second drive.
Others in the forum may know more specifics than me.

Howdy:

All the motherboard settings on the COMPB drive don't jive with what XP is seeing on the COMPA motherboard so, it thinks you have done a major upgrade.. and, it doesn't like that !!!
