I was installing VPN software on a laptop and then I rebooted because this is what the install app said to do next. When the PC came back up it had a screen that has numbers that looked like Hex 0x...etc. It looked a little like the blue screen of death but it was not blue and did not have nearly as much written on it. I went into safe mode and looked in Add/Remove Programs and the VPN software that I was installing is not even listed. I looked at Device Manager to see if there were any yellow question marks on anything and there wasn't. I am not sure what to do for this because I see no clue about what is wrong. Does anybody have any ideas? Thank you very much for your help!

Have a look in event log when in safe mode (run eventvwr.msc) to see if any clues there.

Does the vpn software not have its own uninstall (either in the program group on the start menu - or in the actual program files folder?

Can you boot using last known good configuration option from the safe mode menu?

(if all else fails, a repair reinstall may solve the problem - assuming you're running SP4 best down with a SP4 install CD - you can create one using slipstraming & a CD buner - Google to find if necessary)
