My PC crashed and will not enter recovery console. It starts booting, recognises the disk, but blue screens during the "starting w2k - color screen etc" with message.....ntkernel.exe error. I boot from the CD and try go into recovery console but can't get near the option screen and the PC crashes again! I removed hard disk, set it as a slave, tried connecting it to both a secondary and primary ide on another Win2k machine and the same happens!! Has anyone had this same problem, and is it fixable...fixable meaning can I recover my .pst file which I had spent 10 hours editing????!!!! aarrrrg

When you tried it on other machine, was it as an additional drive (ie, that machine's drive still in place)? Because if so, it sounds like your hard drive has died/is nearly dead (I would have tried what I think you've done - connect it as slave/second drive in another machine to see if data retrievable).

Hi wolluf, thanks for your response, and yes it was as as additional drive on the other machine, and I hate to say it but also think that the drive is trashed. Anyone think otherwise?

Its strange that it brings up an ntkernel.exe error message...this is the file windows points to in the "boot.ini" file to load the OS. It can actually be disassembled without any problem. If ntkernel becomes corrupt tho the OS wont boot. or at least properly!
I dont know if this will help but I dont think you should give up on the drive so soon!

Sorry cant give more info

I have seen this problem. In fact I have seen it recently. A friend brought his computer (one I built) in for me too look at. He had two drives in it. When trying to reinstall Windows he would get the same blue screen. The master ended out having a "technical failure" when trying to low level format it. My guess is an area on the drive platter went bad causing the ntkernel.exe to get currupted. When windows tries to load its files, the same thing happens. Various files will get currupted that load in that spot on the platter. Luckily it was still under warranty because it was not even a year old. IBM cross shipped him a new one.

The symptoms were the same as yours. But I am not going to say this is the solution to your problem. But it can imply that your ntkernel.exe may be currupted. If so something caused it to be this way. Either software or hardware curruption.

What was the last thing you changed on your computer? Maybe that is a good place to start to rule out which is the culprit.

If no change was made do what wolluf suggested. See if the HD can be seen in another system. Be careful though. Viruses can cause data curruption:)

Good Luck,

Well I managed to sort out the problem, and I recovered all my data as well. I used a utility/program called NTFSDOS Professional, which I must say is an absolute winner. It basically allows you to work with NTFS partitions with a dos "emulation". You create two diskettes and I booted with a basic dos diskette, ran the NTFSCHK? whatever program and voila!!!! All my data still intact and the NTOSKRNL.EXE file repaired. I tell you I was so happy I was doing backflips through my living room.
