I am running sbs server2k with exchange 2k. My exchange is acting funny. Heres how.

People out side my server(yahoo, aol)are recieveing
E-mail from my exchange server. The funny thing is that the people who send the e-mail are non existing on my server. I called microsoft and they told me to look at my relay. It may be open. When I went to the smtp properties in the exchange manager and cliked on relay it had the option of only listed below and granted acccess to, it had my server local ip address. Does this mean my relay is open. Pleas help.

Most appreciative,

We had a similar issue, someone was sending email messages from a different server (not ours) and saying it was from randomuser@mydomain.com. The problem came when non-delivery reports were generated by the recipients, they were being sent to my mail server even though it did not generate the messages. My server was getting bogged down sending out several hundred NDR's back (as the originating messages were from non user accounts @mydomain.com) The problem was resolved when we switched to a hosted spam prevention service (Postini) and I had the ability to not accept messages from invalid accounts. Now those emails never make it through Postini's servers, and my server never sees them or reacts to them.

I'm not sure if any of this helps, but I thought I'd share my experience with it!!

Good luck

J
